Guernsey 2006

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 90 days.
It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
In today.

Had decent shots at the following:

2 x 7-8lbs bass
3 x 4-5lbs bass
2 x 2-3lbs bass
1 x 2lbs bream (first one I've seen)
1 x 1lbs mackeral
1 x 1lbs longnose

Guess what I hit out of that little lot....go on, take a guess.....

Just the bloody skiny longnose! How on earth can I miss so many big lumps of bass and hit a scrawny longnose!?

Rather frustrating but such is life. I wasn't helped some recent gun modifications making it spring a leak so it weighed a ton for most of the session.

Was good to see the bream, not sure what type it was, didn't seem like a black or couch and definately not red. Was mainly silver but the fins and tail all seemed to have a black stripe along the very outside edge. Was looking forward to getting a closer look when it was on my spear but it just joined the long list of scared fish :head

Sounds like a interesting dive Magpie! you are obviously not going to tell us where?
I ferried Ed up to the Humps today. Beautiful area :) I had told Ed about my previous encounter with Sammy "real big bloke" I told him. Ed responded "hope he is not around today" Well he was!:)

Sounds like a white bream mate. Get the rods down there if you can, vacant record in Guernsey...

Interesting pic's mart. Ugly looking bugger. Quite like the seal though :) . Actually it must be an amazing experience swimming with a seal. Never had the chance myself. Think I need to go try.

It was my mate John's sort of final trip today. He's just past 60 and has retired. He's leaving Guernsey as he was not local (licensed through his job).
Been my boatman (he doesn't dive) for nearly 7 years. He was one of the best and I'll miss him, although he says he'll be back for holidays.

Took a few pics of him with todays catch. Two of us did 3 tanks plus a couple of trots and some rod fishing. Had a nice mixed bag of soles, plaice, brill, turbot, scallops, bream, mackerel and gurnards plus we returned a pollock, a few wrasse and some extra gurnards. Mainly kept just a couple of each species but in total a nice feed for the 3 of us. Saw a few smaller brill, sole, plaice and an angler fish but left them all for another day.

Many many thanks Mart !
Fantastic trip ....
All started off a bit overcast, foggy and ominous but we decided to give it a try. A real treat is boat diving and not to be missed. Anyway - pretty calm crossing over to the Humps and like Mart said - plenty of tales of man eating seals and monster starry smoothhounds to ...erm ... keep me calm !

Mosied around a few of the Humps to get our bearings and also I haven't been there much at all - the places we went today were a first and all the excitement of diving a new spot was there - alot of fun.

Headed into a lagoon about 10:30 or so and slipped in....
All nice and shallow and clear in the current but as I headed hard up against the rocks out of the current the viz dropped off.

Amazing u/w scenery... neptune grass so tall that I was expecting herds of cows to come billowing through. Such a good spot and lookign very fishy. Tried a few shallow aspettos but was badly weighed for the shallows - saw shed loads of mullet including two monster ones that startled me in the bootlace. Only one sighting of a bass and I fired high....one across the bows... The next thing I hear is Mart shouting at me 'Seal !' ... I see a MASSIVE head (from the water it was big and relatively close) and start sheeeting myself :) I hadn't shot any fish so was thinking might be fun to have a closer look - unloaded the gun and started to swim a bit closer... stopped after four fins and thought... hmmm looks bloody massive ! So backed off :) Healthy distance :) ....Then shot a mullet (high again...)

Next spot looked excellent too. (Oh - fantastic bream on the trots - real beauty :) ) A widish bay with two rocky arms and the tide piiiiiissing along outside of it. Mart 'parked' in the middle and I dropped in over 8m neptune grass patches and sandy/gravelly bottom. Clear to the bottom...

Aspetto'd my way to shore and then around the edges - all around 8m/9m and followed the kelp line around to the more southerly arm picking up a pollack (shot properly this time) on route.

Out at the rocky end tried a few aspettos and had quite decent bottom time but didn't see any fish - I was dropping onto the neptune grass and hiding in it - just saw a mackerel when I was on the surface.

Tried the other arm but I couldn't work out the current - seemed to go one way to the centre of the bay and the other way from the centre... all very confusing so hit the bootlace in the far north corner for one last look.

Back to the boat and tried Mart's mamba - wow ! Very good balance and plenty o' power :) I agree that it works better with the longer spear too - tracks fine as well - niiiice.

Good trip and thanks again Mart - much appreciated - sorry about all the breakages though... I'll have to be more careful what I tread on.

Cheers
Ed

Shermanville, if you remember previous antics, there's something about that area and me missing fish!

White Bream eh, was wondering about that, one for the speccy hunt I reckon Andy!

HEard last month that Hugh F-W might be in Guernsey - a mate of Pete's was trying to organise a boat fish for him and ... a spot of spearfishing.... guess he is just going for the boat fishing :)

Let's see if he is out fishing for bass from one of the boats that hammers the BB ! If he is I'll be dissapointed....

Had a great trip out at Cobo on Saturday. Chris (Spicer) came along but bailed after 40 mins with a really hacking cough that he picked up in South Africa - ebola me'thinks.

Just before Chris left I had picked a nice 41b Bass. I had been trying out some aspetto and found a nice little niche in the rocks overlooking a field of bootlace. Two bass has appeared out of the sun (vis was a rather nice 6-7m), swimming straight towards me. When they came in range the first and larger of the pair spooked and gave me a broadside. It happened fast and I hesitated because I didn't have a clean shot. Just a moment later and he'd turned 360° to come back at me so I let him have it. A good shot just behind that head as he turned away again. Probably about 2m range.

Once he had gone - hacking his way back to shore, I breathed up and dropped into my through again and as soon as I had settled a battleship of a wrasse buzzed in over my right shoulder. I had rejected lots of smaller wrasse already but this was game because of his size. (61b) As he cruised away I took a long shot which entered just behind his left gill-flap and came out his right eye socket. Pretty much a stoner.

A few minutes later, with the wrasse strung, the same thing happened again for another bass. A pair came from the same place out of the sun, paused at about 2m range, then the first one got a splitting headache. Spear entered in the middle of the head and came out half way down his side.

A Pollack joined the crew just a few minutes later. One of about 4 fish coming in with the tide. Pollack seems to be one of those fish that appears way bigger in the water. I think it's all the beautiful fins - they spread out to mach a very impressive shape - and then you shoot them to find it's only a 2lb-er. :duh

Tide was high, was fairly close in, in about 4m of water.

Sunday afternoon and I managed to get out with George on the boat. We spotted OMD dropping gear and chums off at the yacht club slip but he was too starry eyed to see us. ;)

We took an adventure up north of Herm to visit the seals at Grande Amfrocque [sp]. After a bit of creative navigation we found the large markered outcrop surrounded by ripping tides. We saw two rather large seals. One was more inquisitive than the other. The water was CRYSTAL clear but on account of there just being the two of us and the current we decided not to jump in.

While we were enjoying the wildlife G took a phone call from an old acquaintance who had fouled an anchor in Fermain. A salvage team was called for! F.A.B.

20 mins later and we've met up with the folks in Fermain and we've been positioned over the mark for the anchor. A couple of mins to breath up and we drop - George goes right and I go left. First dive, 10m of water, I spotted the chain, followed it for a few yards and there was the anchor surrounded by zillions of baby spiders. Bingo! It had got caught on a bit of rope coming off an old mooring deadman. G found the bail of rope and after a bit of faff with George finning like a mad-man to keep the bail on the surface while we untied it, the owner was reunited with his hardware. Satisfaction all round. :) It has to be said, the anchor, chain and rope are worth a fair few bob so it was well worth the call. (We await our promised reward with eagerness... :friday )

I cut the offending loop of rope on the deadman but the whole thing is a bit of a hazard - there was another smaller anchor wrapped up in it already.

We took a mooch around the bay and visited the little sea-cave in the north wall before coming home. It was getting quite dark.

What an adventure, what a weekend. The fish count wasn't anywhere near what you guys are pulling but it sure felt good to claim a little bounty from the ocean.

We're thinking of making a picnic trip to visit the seals with wives and daughters, one calm day. Maybe we'll be brave enough to drop in!?

PHOTOS: see the size of crab that this 3lb bass had swallowed whole!

A fine haul Marcel !
Looks like you are putting good use to your gun ... maybe you should also form an anchor rescue service :) I was asked to retrieve a toolbox once... it had opened on the way down aswell....

Sorry about missing you, I'm afraid I'm a bit dozy at times (old age - senility).

Fish count - don't count. Having fun counts. Looks like you guys have been having fun.

Well done :) .

Dave

Well had a good dive on Tuesday.
A couple of lads from this forum came over to try our local waters and Mart and Dave very kindly chaperoned them for the day (with me making a brief appearance :) ) - but I'll leave it to them to add their views.

Good dive in a place known for plaice and this is what Dave found pretty swiftly - a little un and a large one that I initially thought was a new bit of carpet for Dave's van... MONSTER :)

Mart had some luck too and all in all we had a very pleasant two or three hour dive marred only slightly by my efforts to induce summer by wearing a 3mm suit... well it is warm for two hours twenty two minutes and then you get uncontrollably shakes !

Plenty of good u/w scenery and the occasional fish... a good dive and good to meet some of our UK neighbours...

Cheers
Ed

Yes Ed's right it was a nice day and really good to meet some new spearo's - now friends.

John took some pic's with his underwater digi camera so looking forward to seeing those posted soon.

Afraid I can't write much more as I'm off on my hols in an hour or two. Gone for a couple of weeks (non diving - unless they let me in at Niagra Falls - maybe not).

So good fishing to all and see you when I get back.

Dave :)

How bigs a MONSTER then?

Looking forward to seeing the pics.

Have a good trip OMD, I'm off this weekend myself to an massive international casting competition to get my arse kicked, but it'll be good to see how the best in the world do it :)

Best of luck Magpie give it to them :blackeye. As Beardy has said I have been laid low with a bad chest which I cannot shake so no diving for me:head . Serves me right for visiting SA in winter. I must say I struggled back to the beach after the cough and weeze turned to an asthma type sensation. The snorkel's airflow felt much to limited and the wetsuit constrictive and the exersion in getting back did not help. I tried to remain calm and take it slow but ended up going into coughing spasms. Longest 600meters I have ever swam.

Good luck Magpie ...and remember: "England expects....";)

Have a great hol. OMD! (A holiday *away* from fishing:confused: Take a barrel.;)).

Spicer, sounds scary. A scuba instructor friend recommended I allow plenty of room around the throat/adams apple when I measured up for my wetsuit. There is apparently an undesirable reaction (carotid reflex?) that can be triggered by an overly snug neck. Although an infection & the current weather sounds like more than enough.

Todays fishing at 5am looking for gilthead was less than successful ... but came back with a nice 3 pound bass. The other shot is from yesterday ... roasting on the roof blocking so slipped off for a dive at the north of the island for 45 mins in my 3mm suit to cool off... shot this from a shoal of similar sized bass - was about 5 pounds - not too deep - a 7m aspetto or there abouts.. the one this morning was 9m behind the reef..... Oh.. the young lad that Mart saw at the knife was there yesterday and told me as I got out that I had a nice bass of five pounds :) Good guess mate ! He also recommended that I go to the knife for bass... always good to get local advice :)

At least you made the effort Ed, better luck next time mate.

I had a interesting experience last evening. I was mackerel fishing off the north coast, while gutting the fish I saw a fin appear on the surface, "wow a sun fish" I thought! I jumped up to get my camera when I noticed a tail fin, must be a shark! Unfortunately the fish dived before I got a pic.
