Hello AB welcome to our home thread I have been thinking of a Alderney "fish in" for some time, Ed is even building a Alderney bass gun!
I am sure you will be busy reading all the info on DB but if you have any questions we will try to help.

Come on Ed we need more details?

I went in tonight & found a few bass, 3.5 & 4lb but I was using my mamba without my custom sleeve (Sarnia) as it is in for repairs. Definitely not used to using it without the sleeve resulting in several missed BIG fish :head
One bass was in double figures, maybe 12lb another 9+. The really bad news is I saw the 12lb'r again & had another shot! Definitely the same fish because I could see my first mistake on its head. Any how it did not seem to damaged, just a skid mark across its forehead
As I lost my green fibre optic sights a few days ago I had to fit the red ones that came with the kit. Surprisingly they were good until about 5mts when they switched off! Maybe the worst news of all is my ears! I have been getting a bit of pain lately but after stretching my 10mt float line tonight, I am in pain "big time" :vangry
If anyone is interested I saw the big bass off the South West point of the Knife in quite deep water (hence the ears)

Mart now I really feel bad!

I sent that link to the Aussie site with a laser sighted gun half - jokingly, but thinking about it is there any reason it wouldn't work? ( refraction of the light beam?) If anyone sees someone with a Mamba with a waterproofed laser level taped to it, you'll know who!

Sorry just read your post again and saw that the sights came with the gun :duh. Also saw a thread from last year while googling laser sights - interestingly someone thought red wouldn't work below a certain depth because it's the first colour to go as you get deeper - perhaps it explains why you couldn't see it?

Would this make it " La Morte Rossa" ?? !!:hmm

Havn't seen those outboards. One of the the most intersting things I found was an old wooden block, the sort used on old sailing ships, lying on the sand in the middle of Cobo. Its made of greenheart (or something similar) hence it sinks. I'll upload a photo later.

Was going to go in last night in the middle of Rocquaine out over the 'grass bed' by Le douit du Moulin. But by the time I finished work...

Maybe tonight after work the forecast looks OK.

Wonder where it came from? Its exactly as I found it, ie very clean. Is it old? from a wreck? buried in the sand and somehow the sand shifted to uncover it?

I also found a ship in a bottle floating in Perelle when I was snorkelling once...yes honest!! I reckon some kid had taken it from home to see if it would sail and lost it.

Thinking about your block Andy I was sure I'd seen something like that before, and I think I've placed it.

At the Vier Marche they had the usual rope making demonstration and I'm sure there was something like that used in it. Three strands of rope went through the holes then it was twisted from one end to make them knit together. You can see on your block where the rope going through has worn away at each hole.

May not be that, but it looks like it.

Dave, your right about Alderney's reputation as an angling mecca so it should follow that it's great for spearing too. Certainly loads of bass and mullet but not so many red mullet as down there.
I don't think there would be any conflict between anglers and spearos as anglers (good ones) tend to favour deep water and fish at night. The good spearfishing spots like Clonque bay and Braye bay are mostly ignored by anglers. Also there is hardly anyone actively spearing up here.
So I reckon you should all jump on Dave's boat and get up here!

In at 5:30am this morning... plenty of current at the back of the knife and looking very fishy. i saw a shoal of 15 bass on the second dive about 10m from where we went in ! All relatively small so lived to see another day.

Fishing quite hard... looked at Fabios watch at the end of the dive... 65 dives ... 1:21 minute max ... 10.3m max...

Fabio had a pair of bass, Alessandro a trice of mullet and I went along for the ride and a bit of excercise ... might go later at 4:30pm ...

I know I should not of gone in the water today but the lure of the big bass was just to much to resist. As it happens I couldn't dive at all & I did not see a single bass (from the surface) Of course I am paying the price, Guess the doctor is the next step :head

Haven't had much time to go daytime spearing lately. Usually i'm in every day or at least every other day but afraid this year I have just too much on. Anyhow have managed a few boat dives and a few night dives but today managed a quick dip over the low tide during the daytime.

Only 2 notable points to the dive. i got a big wrasse, as in really big, like 7lb 14oz. Don't spear too many wrasse although I like to take a few big uns as they do make good eating.

Second highlite of the dive was watching about a dozen big bream stream by me. Amazing sight and they were an easy shot but to be honest I was so suprised to see them that I didn't get off a shot. Not too bothered about not catching one as I'm sure that I will eventually, but for now I can see them in my minds eye. They were pretty big, over 3lb I reckon.

Not much of a detailed report but not enough hours in the day for all the things i need to do.

Ed did that count as a night dive? Looked perfect when I drove past this evening at 6ish - doing something else unfortunately!

In 5:30ish yesterday pm @ Rocquaine. Not much to be seen at all. A couple of mullet and a school of the same in the shallows. Think it was too calm!! water was very warm though. Met a couple of guys in a boat who were moaning about another spearo in the water without a bobber.

Got out yesterday at 7pm with a young guy who wanted the experience.
He didn't have a suit so I didn't expect it to be a long one.... however... he is, shall we say, 'well insulated' - we ended up in for an hour and a half!!

We saw lots of mullet coming in with the tide around Fort Grey but the were all pretty small (<2lb). They were very nice to see though.

I ended up polling a Golden Grey in the shallows as we came in - in near darkness. It ain't half getting dark early now eh!

Just a quicky for podge and anyone else interested.

Eating wrasse. First off I remove the 2 fillets. I don't gut or scale the fish but only cut the classic "J" fillets thus avoiding the rib bones. I remove the skin with a sharp knife running it between the skin and the fillet meat with the fillet skin side down on a flat surface. I check for any lateral line pin bones which you sometimes get if you cut too close to the ribs. Then I chunk the meat. No bones no scales just firm white flesh.

Cooking wise I must profess not to be a great chef but younger brother smokes them for me and they are delicious. Older brother frys/bakes/fish cakes them etc and he rates them. The meat is very firm with a fine texture and a mild flavour.

Lots of rubbish talked about wrasse being inedible, mainly said by people who've never tried it.
