Happy new year all. Can't be worse than last year!! I might even get the suit out this year if it hasn't rotted to the shed where it's hung up... Looked at it a few times, while getting the lawn mower out that is... Spear gun is still there, have tried shooting pigeons with it in the garden but no joy. I need a gun.

Mart, those fillets look superb!

I went in at the plaice place tonight, first flatties i've caught all year :)

Is there a word for when you have shivvers on top of shivvers, 1 hour 45 and it got chilly, great to be out in the vis tho :)

Great stuff Jonny, you need to be careful shooting plaice though as you can snap or damage your spear very easily.
Filleting fish gets easier with experience & those place look like perfect practice - not much better than a small plaice plaice fillets fried in butter & oil till just crispy on the edges.

Nice one Jonny, Flatfish some of the tastiest fish there are.
Happy 2009 gents:)

Happy New Year !
All the best to one and all for 2009. Happy diving and spearing and can't wait for warmer water....
Take it easy - Ed

Nice vid Jonny, good work. You don't need to shoot flatties though mate, they just sit there and you can prod them.

Great advice given to me by both Foxfish and OMD was to make sure you grab the spear on the underside of the flattie as when its plunged into the fish/sand the barb can be kept shut and the fish wiggle off.

For those interested, I have just updated the Danglers Bass Clubs final positions for 2008.

Went again tonight. After a year of crap vis and rough weather it's nice to have clear water and while not exactly calm at least the wind is east and leaves the west coast sheltered.

Normally at this time of year I would just be making the occasional (very occasional) night dive. However a combination of a year of poor conditions, currently good vis, calm sea state, a new suit, being on my hol's and importantly good tides, have seen me keener than usual.

Went well out to my favourite night flatty spot. Good low tide meant I could walk further and swim less but still a good way, for a night dive anyway. Nice and clear but very cold. Total dive time was about 1hour 15 minutes and that was enough. There were only a few fish certainly compared to peak summer season. Brought home a couple of plaice and a pollack. No records but the biggest plaice went 2.5lb.

Dave

Looks like the SOLE-flu-cure is already having an effect Mart!
Dave gave me the PLAICE he caught and I'm banking on that acting as a flu preventative!
(NB: my fishy gift was unsolicited...didn't drop enormous hint like wot someone else did!!! )
...reminds me of Lou Reed's "Take a Walk on the Wild Side" - " ...lookin' for soul food and a place to eat ..." sorry, I'm hard of herring, so I have to see everything in whiting. Must go now, on my turbot-charged motor pike and side -carp.

Happy New Year all!:)

Wot he said ^^^^!

Great to see so many braving the winter chill! Here's to a fantastic season ahead...:friday

Don't know about anyone else but I'm feeling quite optimistic about this year visability wise. Everywhere I look it seems clearer than its been all year, with none of the thick shore bound murk band.

Yes it stirs up on an exposed coast, but the difference is it settles in a day or two where as all last year it stayed in suspension.

How it settles after the first proper storm of winter will show whether this is a permanent clearance or just a temporary event, but fingers crossed eh!

Mind you, its 4 or 5 months before my gear gets wet again!

The forcast for Saturday is starting to look a bit special - calm & sunny :) might not be many fish, but i'll take the camera.. Anyone up for it?

Tom, i agree the vis is defo better than last year - that suspended silt was around before the March big storm. will be interesting to see what the next storm brings...
