Happy new year everyone. Cracking start to the year with clear skies and calm seas....albeit a bit chilly.
Skipped ormering this time as was out with Mrs Moz but did bag a bumper haul of 30ish good sized clams in an hour. Chowder for tea tonight.

Mike

Happy new year all, and a good one its been so far, 21 ormers yesterday, with a dozen with a lobbie 2day (turns out they are around this time of year, I saw 2). Off down L'eree tomorrow with the gaff lobbie hunting, watch out for me, I'll be the idiot down the west coast up to his nuts wearing a pair of my bright blue "stealth" Boardshorts. happy hunting 2010.

Hey Moz, I wonder what sort of clams you are talking about?
If they are "sand gapers" dont tell to many folk where you found them (or mention where on the net) as they are a very sort after fishing bait but generally classed as disgusting to eat!
At one time sand gapers were very common as were razor clams but like so many other creatures this is no longer so!!

You're not wrong mart, those gapers are hard work to find and even worse to dig out. It's like digging to Oz!! Not found them much cop for bait myself.

Ormering today showed a pretty dead area, hardly anything in it, found 4 ormers. Smallest 82mm. Saw nothing undersize.

Hi Fro

I know someone with a very similar catch of ormers and lobbies, also ridiculously wearing boardshorts in this weather - could you be he??:)

Well done on the snails and lobsters chaps! looked a bit chilly to be in the water without plenty of rubber!

It was such an epic day - i started with a pre-dawn boat trip around to the south coast to drop a line on a bank. Had a heavy shower of hail that left a thick layer of hail on the deck!

back in and a quick change to the wetsuit, loaded the kayak and down to Havelet for a paddle and dive. My first time looking for scallops (thanks to tom and omd for the guidance on where to go :) ). Paddled out and round - lots of people ormering that area.
the Water was super clear - a slight hase in the first 2m, but then crystal! temperature was 10degrees, so not too bad with the sun out :)
deepest dive was 9m which with the vis, was quite comfortable for me, so pleased with that. found a good selection of scallops - enough for a good starter for ourselves and friends last night :)

Cooked them with garlic & chilli in butter - superb!

Well done Jonny with your 'ormering alternative' adventure!
A new hunt in a new spot ...and with success....splendid effort!

I did once go spearing on an ormering tide, in April, and got some very funny looks from the ormerers, not surprisingly!

Well done jonny, do you mean you went rod fishing on a south coast bank?

Yes mart, we had intended to head round to try fishing the figaro, but the 'moderate becoming slight' sea was very moderate that early in the day so we ended up on a bank off petit bot where it was more sheltered.

Colin you're absolutely right - it did feel like people were looking at me with that 'you diving for omers?' look - chatted to one group as i paddled back and the guys asked me just that lol.

just one which i think was a bite. whole squid on, came back up with just the head. i find my rig is getting spun round too much so the trace gets twisted around the weight - using a portland rig... any ideas?

Could be lots of reasons for your bait spinning but basically the deeper you fish the more you need to specialize your rig.
Fishing a 30' deep reef or sand bank, virtually any rig will go down safely if you release line slowly.
Deep reefs or strong tides need dedicated rigs to fit the conditions but they normally utilise a boom... best tip is to streamline your bait, dont stuff a six0 five times through the bait - just hook once in the head.
Dont let out your bait to fast..
Use a long boom.

I recon i was dropping the bait down too fast and making it spin - got a couple of sliders to keep the weight/trace apart now...

Has anyone tried diving fermain area at night? just thought it looks good for it? i guess bream, reds, ...

Might be worth it at night Jonny but as far as angling in the bay goes it's pretty dead during daylight hours other than mullet which congregate there early in the year. The angling is better once you hit deeper water outside the moorings. As always though, spearing is very different to angling and a good anglers spot often isn't great for spearing and vice versa.

I had a dusk into dark mooch round fermain once, and saw precisely nothing of interest. Sure there'll be reds and the odd flattie in there at night though and there are bass and bream to be had in the day.

Dave do you have a day off today? i cant beleive they closed the schools!? (good for you if you have a day off tho:) )

PS Isn't every day a day off for you Jonny? ;)
