howzit it going guys.

Was wondering if anyone could give abit of advice about the currents around here, if its safe to spear all around the coast etc...

Missed 3 good sized bass earlier in the week at richmond, went out late yesterday afternoon viz was average plenty of good sized wrasse about and shoals of sand eels but no bass unfortunately

Hi mate probably best to ask on our main thread http://forums.deeperblue.com/guernsey/81477-guernsey-2009-a-43.html#post768283 but our tides can be very intimidating if not extremely dangerous on occasions!!
Depends on how experienced & confident you are, the state of tide, the size of tide & if you are on your own?
Say hello on our thread & read though some of last summers post to get some idea of where to go & at what state of tide.

Hello Cruise, as Foxfish says you might not get much response here, most of our boys only look at the Guernsey 2009 main thread.

Reagrding tides there are certainly come areas you need to be careful of. The North East area either side of Bordeaux has some very strong flows at the right state of the tide. It's usually pretty obvious where the tide is running hard though from looking at the surface of the water.

You also get fairly strong rips all round the coast where it is constricted through gaps in reefs and over shallows so you always need to be aware of it. Best way to tell is to keep an eye on the seaweed, it its flat to the bottom you need to be aware of whats going on.

HTH.

Hey, by your accent are you from South Africa ?!
Plenty of currents and each beach is different with each state of tide and time of tide.

Neap tides (get a tide guide fromsomewhere like Boatworks plus) are not too bad but watch out for spring tides as the water movement is obviously greater.

Bordeaux way is ok anhour either side of high or low if you know where you are going and which way the tide will flow and not only which way but what happens when it hits the islands there - all confusing if you don't know what you are doing (and dangerous!)

Best maybe to go with a regular here so you get to know the currents with some company - maybe someone who speaks French if you do go on a Spring tide :)

Welcome to DB cruise.

Low tide is the best bet for not much tide. With lots of reefs above water the tide is pushed further offshore so there is none in the bays. You can still get plenty of tide at low water but you will be further offshore outside of the headlands. At high tide the current can run strong even in the bays but generally it's only a problem if you venture too far.

Mostly we fish the low tides and mainly the west coast. Low tide down west sees the tide running from north to south or looking out to sea from the shore that's from your right going to your left.

Tell us a little about yourself. If you need help there's lots of experience on here. Fish are just starting so good time to begin. Lots of helpful local spearo's if you want to team up. Ever been night diving, 'cause that's another story?

Dave.

howzit

ja i am south african been here 5 years now but was mainly into kitesurfing when the wind is blowing and play rugby for guersney aswell.

Did abit of spearing last year shot 4 bass but this year ive takin it abit more serious. The currents just really scare me - dont want to end up in france.

Ive mainly been around the richmond cup and saucer and grand roque areas and seem to be doing alright but wouldnt mind going out with someone who knows abit more and wouldnt mind helping the novice.

O ja by he way has anyone seen a shark in these waters yet???

Div

We dont have any problems with sharks mate, no one has seen one free diving but some have on scuba.
