im new to spearfishing and was wondering what is being measured in a speargun. the spear shaft or the barrel. Ie if the gun is a 120 is that the length of the shaft or the actual gun?

There are two different styles of measuring guns. If you are in the US and the measurement is in inches than its more than likely the length of the gun stock... (from tip of muzzle to back of butt) which in my opinion isn't a very good representation of the guns abilities i.e you can have a 55" gun where the trigger is 6 inches from the back of the gun and a 55" gun where the trigger is 2 inches from the back of the gun and therefore the guns band pulls would differ by about 4 inches, it also is a useless measurement as it doesn't help you find out the proper shaft length or band lengths.

The Euro style is measuring the band pull so from the loading tab (on the shaft) usually the one closest to the trigger to the back or middle of the band slot. This is a lot more useful as it helps with a lot of things. Just from a single measurement i.e 120 you can figure out the band lengths, shaft lengths, general range of the gun and so forth.

Just another example of how we americans have to do it differently... even if it is more difficult:friday

Pneumatic Spearguns are also measured from tip of the mussle to back of the but.
My Mares jet 70 is 70 cm long.

excelent thanks. now when sizing for a mid handle gun, is the butt of the gun supposed to be in your elbow or is the handle supposed to be further up along the barrel?

If your ordering a custom gun it doesn't really matter, put the handle anywhere you want.

I personally wouldn't bring the butt anywhere past your elbow as that puts it closer to your face and gives more of a chance for you to blow your teeth out when your not paying attention:blackeye
