I 've been hunting with a pole spear on offshore wrecks (NC Coast) for about three years now. For 80% of the hunting, this works fine and I've bagged reef fish up to 10lbs. For that 20% I'm wondering what would be a good gun in the $300.00 dollar range. From reading these forums I have a little insite into the various gun configurations but cant seem to decide.

The diving conditions are mostly blue water...rarely under 30' vis...mostly in the 50-80' range. The water depth is between 80-130ft.

There have been several occasions to shoot large Cobia, African Pompano, etc., but I've declined to try that with a pole spear. There are also small grouper...usually under 5lbs, and a variety reef/wreck fish including spades, triggers, tog, seabass, snapper and sheepshead that I cant often get to. I'm ready to move up to something for those fish that are out of the range and size limitations dictated by a pole spear. There are occasionally blue water species on these wrecks...but thats a whole other level. I hope I've covered all the conditions in this area in enough detail. Any input would be appreciated.

You cant go wrong with any of the known guns out there, but stick to the bigger sizes like nothing under 1.1 or 1.2. I am currently using 900 Beuchat Carbon Mundial and i love it.. if i had conditions like yours id definetly get the 1.2 or bigger cuz ull need that longer range. My .02 cents

Oh and try it without the tank ;)
