I am starting spearfishing(responsibly) this year, and would like some suggestions regarding a reef gun for fish up to 12 lbs or so. I have had good experience with OMER's gear and webservice, however I can buy JBL guns locally. But, I never see anyone using these guns on all the spearfishing sites I have looked at(all of them). Any recommendations are welcomed. Erik

Although JBL's guns aren't highly regarded, IMHO they really come into their own in the Pacific Northwest. The guns tend to favor big fish in low viz. I'd recommend any of the 38 Special or Competition Magnum models. Euro guns tend to be faster at the expense of penetration power. They work really well when a fish might otherwise dodge the spear. However, you can bounce a shaft off the head of a big Ling or Rockfish. See what the other divers in your area are using. It's a good starting point and you don't have to make mistakes that have already been made.
