Hi everybody. I dive in N. Cal. where the water is around 50 deg F. I stay out for 2-4 hrs. I wear a 7mm semi-dry suit and gloves. My problem begins the day after my first dive. The palms of my hands and between my fingers feel like they are full of cactus stickers. I have a hard time handling anything. I never let this stop me from diving, and generally go 2-3 days straight. The pain stops after the second or third day, but about a week later I get small non-painful, non-liquid filled blisters where I felt the pain. The blisters multiply until they touch and turn into larger blisters. The skin cracks or tears and then it peels, or I peel it off. This goes on until I have lost the entire outer layer of my skin on my palms and between my fingers. This has been happening for as long as I can remember. Have any of you had this problem? Any cures or preventative measures out there? I'll try just about anything, short of not diving.

Try high doses of fish oil internally and tea tree or lavender oil topically.

(Warning on tea tree/lavender oil: make sure that the brand you buy is solvent-free. And because the vapors react with indoor stuff, apply it outdoors only.)

Also do not let doctors bully you into using corticosteroid drugs. They may reduce symptoms temporarily, but will ultimately exascerbate them.

Hope this helps :) keep me posted.

Do you have only one pair of gloves? Is it possibly a reaction to the material/s in the gloves?

Perhaps to try your first session/day without and see what happens?

Are there any other areas that are affected, like your feet? I'm guessing they are in neoprene too.......

Either way, seems you need to find what causes the problem, rather than how to treat the result? Eliminate the gloves as a possible cause and take it from there.

Lil D's suggestion is a good one - I have done this. Also any herbs etc. that may help your liver are worth a shot. AND - it is possible to develop an allergy to latex - so why not neoprene.
