Hi all
I wrote an account some time back on my first experience with white sharks called 'The Silent beauty', and was fortunate over the weekend to have got eye-ball to eyeball again with these beautiful, beautiful animals.
I went to do some brochure updates at Gansbaai, and after a 4 am wake-up call, quick breakfast and 2 hour drive, was preparing to board a boat for 'shark-alley', the notorious channel between Geyser rock and Dyer island.
This weekend, we were blessed with very clean water, and we did'nt have to wait long. Within 6 minutes of turning off the motors, the unmistakable shape of a HUGE white shark came gliding up thru the clear water to say hi.
Suiting up quikly, I hopped off the boat and into the alley cage, and was treated to 45 minutes of interaction with the oceans ultimate predator.
With my freediving experience and the clean water, the treat is made extra special, as the sharks seem to follow a set pattern of circling the cage out of their natural curiosity. As a freediver, I was able to sit quietly on the bottom of the cage at least 30-40 seconds before she arrived, and then watch the car-sized shape approach from at least 20 meters away, and eventually pass by within a few feet of me. Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow doest not do this experience justice. With a small, not-so-great-quality camera, I am able to send one of the weekends pics to show you, but I wish every DB member could experience this special animal in her own habitat, and in safety.
Jeff
