Wow that's fine Jim, but I suggest you to do it "free-shaft": if you tie the pencil to a line there could be an elastic return effect, and the pencil might violently bounce back to where it came from (this is what happens when you fire a pneumatic out of water).

Thanks one and all. Had lots of birthday cards with variations on the "Old Fart" theme. Some of them implying that I could produce a truly awesome gun based on Jims instructions.

Also had some new toys including the wickedest multi prong paralyser spear head from my brother. It is so EVIL. Any Great Whites around here better look out as I will be armed and dangerous.

Looking forward to making some new friends in person this summer and next time I'm across the Pond I want a personal demo from JD2U.
