Hello All!

I was hoping a search might answer this question and spare Me the embarrassment but no joy.

A couple of weeks or so ago I was having a particularly enjoyable dive. I was very comfortable, strong and calm in the water, more so than usual.
It seemed like I could spend all day on the bottom.
infrequently I have excellent days like this, and when I do, I tend to be more aware of things, More in tune with My body and more consciously aware of safety issues.
So its usually My head rather than My lungs that tell Me to surface, and when I do surface My breathing is relaxed and I don't feel gassed and it takes a conscious effort to make Me breathe more purposefully.

Anyway, here's the thing...

During a long, relaxing 'square' dive to around 10 metres I felt something stirring on ascent and as I surfaced... there's 'percy' standing to attention.
I know I was enjoying the dive but thats entirely unnecessary.

In That cautious state of mind I couldn't help wondering... could this be a precursor to a bad episode like BO or something? or an indication of too much or too little of one gas or the other?

Hope someone says something clever so I don't regret this post :-D

BTW, I'm Davie and I'm new, love the forum!

There does seem to be a link between hypoxia and an increase in sexual stimulation. Check out [ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erotic_asphyxiation]Erotic asphyxiation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]
Obviously your incident was unintentional but the precursor seems to be the fact you were engaged in an activity requiring apnea. I couldn't find any info specific to diving but maybe that is just because no one has had the balls:) to admit to similar experiences.
Maybe you should have the honour of coining a new term. If so I'll be sure to add it to my glossaryof freediving terms - http://forums.deeperblue.net/general-freediving/72769-glossary-freediving-terms.html

great thread!, can't say it's ever happened to me though, but I live in hope. I assume you wear a thinner suit, in my 7MM truck tire sidewall thickness outfit "percy" may try to make a move one day but I doubt he'd get far. Cold water does what it says too, and I'm never too proud leaving the water .....

Hi Adam,

Yeah I was aware of the Autoerotic Asphyxia thing. That in part put My mind on that track.
I used to smoke quite heavilly some years ago and it could also induce an involuntary stiffie when I'd smoked a few too many.

If it happens commonly during a dive due to hypoxia then I could understand but the confusing thing is that is hasn't happened during a tough dive or during dry training, even when pushing myself to My limits.

Also... If Hypoxia is known to cause erections, then why has it never been touched upon on this board?

I'd like to think there is some other explanation, I'd hate to think I was close to the edge on such a good dive.
Until I know more I'm always gonna be a bit worried by the Sub Aquatic Stiffie.

Davie

Thin suit in Norway?!?!? I don't think so lol. Half this country is in the arctic so its a 6.5mm open cell for Me, keeps Me nice and toasty.
These Norwegians boast of the 'gulf stream' and wintertime sea temperatures of 6-8C... I haven't got the heart to tell Them that's not very warm.

There has been a mention on here before of some folks feeling kinda heated after a dive but Ive never heard of this one before...
Perhaps you should pay attention to the dive and leave those thoughts on the shore next time rofl Sorry but someones got to take a jab at this lol

There were no feelings of an X-rated nature tho, just the usual buzz of a dive... You know? the kind that exists all over, not just err..locally.

come to think of it... I actually had a fight with My Mrs before i dived that day.

Hi Davie I think there was a thread about this but it had to be blocked as it got a bit "intense" or some comments did at least if I remember correctly. I doubt you are alone and credit to you for bringing it up ( pardon the pun ) found some related threads for you.

To be fair... I don't think I could share waters with a Great White and keep it up.

On My very next dive after the stiff one I swam headlong into a huge Lion's Mane Jelly and took a huge hit to the face, wrists and heels... the sight of stinging Jellies are now like a cold shower.

Id rather swim with the odd shark in the area than those damn jellies, I hate them with a passion, mind you no sharks would be cool but then the waters are too cold haha

Gotta feel for those poor australians. They got Great whites and deadly box jellies, think they got Portuguese man o' wars too. Not to mention the sea Kraits and other marine snakes... and europeans think that place is some kind of paradise lol.

Its nice being the second biggest predator in the Fjord.

hey dude, we got the sharks, box jellies and portugese man o wars too(which decided my face was a great meal in stilbaai).
another funny thing was when i went diving with a buddy once and he stuck his hand in a hole to catch a crayfish and he grabbed an electric ray intead, his face was a picture!!!!!!
