.......I seem to have lost it and can't seem to remember when I last had it? :duh

More seriously my dive reflex has diminished over the past 12 months and in testing HR during apnea, PO2 after apnea (inhale and exhale) and SaO2 during apnea I'm amazed at the lack of a dive response compared to 12 months ago. Has anyone come across anything like this before or have any ideas on what would cause this?

Could certain types of training desensitise the dive response or habituate a negative impact on the dive response?

thanks
Andy

Actually I was shopping at Safeway today and I saw your dive response. It was in the specialty foods section. It said 'ADR's Dive Response', it was packaged in rigid transparent plastic. Of course I thought I should buy it, but it was priced at $1599.99, and I'm broke!

Seriously though, the only thing I know of that could screw up dive responses are:
- Breathing of pure oxygen
- Prolonged cardio with no diving

Both are 'gray' areas, and neither is 'proven' to affect the dive response.

Thanks Eric and I'd happily pay the amount just to have it back. It has me completely confused and Seb an I tried all sorts of apnea tests to try and get to the bottom of it. The only thing (an this is right up your ally) that showed a glimmer of hope was ice packs on my head and face. This did result in the best dive response I've had in ages but as soon as I started exercising the tug of war was lost and the exercise response blew the dive response away in about 10-15 seconds. Looks like I might have to join you in cold waters without a wetsuit!!

Hi Andy,
I know where it is, it's in Hawaii waiting for you. :)
A week of deep diving in warm water and you will be diving great. My statics get better when I train constant too. Doing 2-3 weeks of maximum dives is something that a lot of current world record holders rely on to achieve a maximum dive reflex before they attempt a WR. This is exactly what Martin & Mandy do, they could not achieve the sort of performances they do with just a one off dive. Mind you the dive reflex is only part of it.

I tend to ignore heartrate on a breathold nowdays, don't think it's that important. Many people manage 7 minute statics and above with a high heartrate. It only tends to decrease at the end in most cases. Don't know what it does on a dive, would imagine similar at the start, but should get some bardycardia from the pressure as you get deeper.

See you in Hawaii !

Hi Wal,

Maybe I did leave it on the 74m fixed line when I was there last! :duh Given that you get there the day before me, put it aside for me if you see it.

Not long now and I'm sure looking forward to doing some dives in that awesome clear blue water with you.

Andy,
It certainly aint here!! I am in Kuwait teachin at the moment and I have yet to freedive since being here since November!!
If I do spot it behind a mosque I will brush off the sand and send it over!!

Dave,

Thanks for letting me know. I didn't think it was in Kuwait but it is nice to be sure.....I'll rule Kuwait off the list. :)

Wal,

Interesting point you raise about heart rate and it had me trawling the forum for Tyler's 7:20 plot and also had me looking again at your 7min plot.....you are quite right and it surprises me to see such long statics with little to no bradycardia....thanks for pointing it out.

We had a change to play with pulseoximeters lately. My pulse is 55-65 throughout the static and what I thought was interesting, Timo Kinnunen was constantly in 70-80 range. A slight drop (about 5 bpm) was noticed in both at the time contractions started.

So at least a fast hr does not stop you from reaching over 8 minutes. Could he go further with stronger bradycardia? Who knows.

I must point out that these were just quick experiments, ie not any real preparation or warmup. Maybe the reflex didn't yet kick in...But still over 6 minute static for Timo and if I remember correctly around 5:30 for me.

On an exhale static I got really strong bradycardia and hr dropped to around 35 in the end. Packing alot seems to have the inverse effect.

I belive the pulse in static has mostly to do with breathing preprations (hyperventilation). I regulary measure my HR in static and noticed thath when I breath realy slow and not too deep I allways end up with HR from 28 to 34 after 2 min. When I breath slyghtly quicker and deepr I also reach the 30's but after 3 min and if i hyperventilate (slight tingling in my fingers) i can't get below 54-58.
But this doesn't affect my static times a lot that are about 5 min.

Benny,

I'll check his kennel but he hasn't chewed anything of mine since he ate my hiking boots 4 years ago!

Can you check your training bag...maybe you picked it up by mistake last time we were at the pool?

Andy - I think it is living somewhere with mine. Or maybe I dropped mine to the bottom of the quarry. Next time the Angels are down there I'll get them to have a look...

nothing seems to kick in with me these days either....

Hi Sam,

Maybe we can get a two for one deal?...let me know if the Angels find it (I've posted a reward for mine) :)
