Well, the gun is 99% finished. I have one or two more coats of epoxy and I need to install the loading pad on the butt. This might be the last set of pictures I have a chance to download of the hybrid as we leave for a 6 month long trip to New Zealand next week and I have a ton of stuff I need to take care of before I leave... including 5 other guns
We took it out the other day and tested out he balance and ballast. I filled the hollow part of the handle with lead which is a neutral point and was expecting to have to add more to the butt in order to counter ballast the muzzle (which in my experience with hybrids tends to be very heavy due to the buoyancy of the wood stock, picture a seesaw with a really fat kid [muzzle] on one end and a skinny kid[wood stock] on the other).
Surprisingly the gun was very well balanced. A little heavy for my personal liking but K*1 seemed to like it. The muzzle was almost neutral when holding it out in front of you. It weights 6lbs dry with out the shaft and still floats. We had some trouble with the shaft we origanlly tried out. It was an 8mm shaft with a wong tip that was very short. There was just enough room for the slide ring between the muzzle and adapter. Even with the 8mm shaft recoil was minimal, when fired the shaft didn't drop at all, dead accurate out of the muzzle and for about 75% of the range, but right at the end of the shot it had a weird whip and always skirted left. The whip was side to side as apposed to up and down which I thought was very strange. Im not sure if it had something to do with how short the shaft was, if it had a bend in it, or if the slip tip was causing it but when we took it out the next day with a 7mm shaft and there was no problem. He even had it over powered a bit with 3 5/8 bands. Ive come to the conclusion that 3 5/8 is a bit much. I think the ultimate set up will be a 60", 7.5 mm shaft with a slip tip and either 2 5/8 bands or 3 9/16.
He did land a nice omilu on his first shot.
So now its time for a picture of another Hybrid. I insisted that paying for the cost of the parts for this build was enough. It was my first try at a hybrid and I wasn't all that sure how it would turn out. K*1 insisted that he did something else and wouldn't drop the subject. I had been looking for a hybrid pole spear for our trip to New Zealand for some time and he knew it so he insisted on getting one for me. He ordered me a 9' Ohara from Kris at Westside Dive and Tackle and I am pretty stoked!
I havn't had a whole lot of time to go play with it yet but am excited. I ordered a flopper tip for it and the whole package breaks down to less than 63" which is perfect for traveling with the rest of my gear.
