Hello,

I am a 21 yr old student at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. I was raised in Laguna Beach, California and am entirely new to the sport of Spearfishing. I have many questions about equipment to buy, but will post specific questions in specific threads. If you have any suggestions for where to find good info for beginners, I appreciate the extra help!

Thanks

hi Wannabe

Hey Wannabespearo! Are you one of the girls from the show Laguna Beach :).I didn't read anything about your gender so I don't know if you're male or female but jokes aside welcome to DB .

Laguna Beach, huh, boy you are really in the thick of it, down thataway. I'm in Lakewood and use the Pacific Sport Center at the base of Belmont Pier. I would recommend that you add www.spearboard.com to you list of websites. Though many of the posters there are tankers from other parts of the US (and there can be rather a bit of bad blood between some of them and freedivers), the California section is freediver central. Feel free to ask any of the guys there as well as here what's good. Likely if you ask 10 people, you'll get eleven answers but at least you'll be headed in the right direction.

As a student in a really expensive college, your first problem is that good stuff is expensive but I would still recommend that you try to save up and get the best the first time. That way you don't have to buy it after you've already spent money on less good stuff and thus save money. Your first need will be a 5mm wetsuit, mask, snorkel, fins and a Rob Allen rubber weight belt with weights. Make sure that you try on several masks until you find one that really fits. And don't forget gloves and a hood. It's cold out there in the Japan Current.

Go to Sportmart and find a DVD called Spearfishing 101. Watch it a couple of times. You might even consider going out with Dale and Gonetobaja Expeditions. I did for my first ocean dive and it was well worth the price. Had a ball. So will you. Great kind of hunting, this.
