Hello from a newbie from Malta

Hello all Been hanging out on the forums for a few days now and found a wealth of information so I thought I'd introduce myself.

I'm a 23 year old, been snorkelling all my life with some shallow water free diving but nw I'm interested in going deeper and spearing fish. The law in my country requires that you have a license for a proper spearing gun so while I'm waiting for my application to go through I'm hunting with a 3-pronged rod with a piece of rubber tubing attached (don't know the term for it in English I'm afraid). So far I've been down spearing with this thing twice. First time I didn't manage to hit anything but I did stumble onto an octopus and hooked that the second time after about an hour I managed to spear a fish but I had no idea what to do once I'd hit it. Tried to bring it to the surface on my metal rod but it wriggles free and swam off.

As equipment goes I'm using the very basic: some fins and a mask I've been using since I was 15 or so, the metal rod and nothing else.

I'm from Malta, small island in the Mediterranean with very warm seas this time of year. I've found some local dive shops online and will be making my way over there when I get a chance to get some tips about local courses etc.

There are a few guys living in Malta on this forum, hopefully they will say hi.
I had a holiday on your island earlier this year, but unfortunately we had very strong wind and huge waves for most of the week! It does look like an amazing place to freedive though, although you will need to be able to get some depth going...

What you are using we call a Hawaiian sling, or three prong. Too bad the fish got off. I don't shoot anything unless it's good to eat. You might get a book on local fish in your area so you know what you are looking at. And if you do shoot something, mean it. That way you have a better chance of bringing in your catch. Good Luck.
