Hi all I am just wanting to start out spearfishing/freediving. I have my scuba license but due to the insane cost of all the gear and my very shallow pockets so to speak, I thought I'd give freediving a go. Ive looked on the net and can't seem to find any dive shops around North brisbane. Any help with this would be much appreciated as I don't want to buy fins and mask over the net incase of a bad fit.

Welcome to Deeperblue. We have a regional subforum where you can post, ask questions, and maybe find a dive shop or buddy, linked here: http://forums.deeperblue.com/forums/australia-new-zealand-the-pacific-islands.97/

I got into freediving for the same reason. I bought my wetsuit, bcd, and mask/snorkel/fins, then realized I had to spend a lot more money to get fully into scuba. I was a penniless college student, so that was out of the question. Freediving is much cheaper and just as fun.

Welcome to DB @phr34k1nkewl - you'll find tons of friendly people on here and tons of advice around Freediving. A good person to talk to is @BennyB who lives in Brisbane and is able to give you a few pointers i'm sure!

Did I hear my name mentioned? ;-)

G'day and welcome to the forum! You are lucky in that Brisbane has one of the largest freediving communities in Australia, if not the world! There is also a massive spearfishing community up here too.
For freedive training, we train 3-4 times a week at Chandler (South side just off the gateway motorway) and in the Valley pool near the city. Our training is coordinated through the Brisbane Freedivers Facebook page, once you request membership someone will add you fairly quickly. The page link is https://m.facebook.com/groups/165462526864831?ref=bookmark&__user=598107390

In terms of equipment, many of the scuba shops have a small inventory of freedive/spearfishing gear but the big shop is Adreno in Woolloongabba, they're one of the largest dive shops in the world. Their website is www.spearfishing.com.au and they have heaps of different brands of fins, wetsuits etc.

I hope that helps - give me a shout if you need any more advice.

Cheers,
Ben
