Hi guys,

I'm a long time scuba diver and snorkeler looking to raise my game.

I've been certified for 26 years and a PADI instructor for 7 of those. I've been snokeling for 30ish years.

I live in South Korea and have always wanted to dive with the haenyos.

I can't add much on apnea but I can probably answer any scuba question you may have.

Take it easy

Hi Nic, welcome to the forum.
There must be some exciting dives around your way?

Hi Foxfish,

Sadly I live in Seoul. I'm close to the South China Sea (West Sea) but it has a shallow silty bottom with an average viz of 30 cms :(

The Sea of Japan (East Sea) is much nicer with 12-15 M viz and pleasant temps from May to October. Not much life due to overfishing but beautiful bottom topography.

Jeju island is a cheap plane ride from me and is semi-tropical with marine life as abundant and varied as Thailand!

Haenyos exist all over Korea but they're most common in Jeju. I've been here 10 years and never dived with them. Hopefully I can tick that box this summer ^^

hi mate do you dive alot? dive safe

In the season (April/May-Oct) if I'm lucky enough to have students I'll dive every weekend. If I've got no students I'll generally go once a month getting 4-5 dives on a trip. It's a looooong drive from my place to the East sea which is why I'm not getting more.

I see you're in PI. I've got a bunch of dives in LOS (I did my internship at Scubacat, Phuket) but I never made it to PI. I'm not sure why. It's probably time to fix that ^^

I envy you Earl!

I'd love to dive the Philippines one day Earl. I appreciate the offer and I'll act on it if/when I get myself there.

Thank you ^^

Welcom Nic.

Not a spear fisherman then ;)

Hey Nic welcome to DB :)

Thank you Simos! I'm liking it already ^^

would this be the proper place for a starcraft joke ?

Welcome to DB!

Don't start! Although Sudden Attack has replaced Starcraft as the national sickness.

Welcom Nic.

Not a spear fisherman then ;)

I've got a Cressi Comanche 75 and a Korean pole spear but there's only very modest spearing here. It's also (semi) illegal which makes it a little, er, complicated. Urchins are abundant here and good eating.

By the way, I enjoyed your threads on rigging guns for dummies and rigging kayaks for spearing. Great stuff!

hey nic,
been to seoul dozens of times love Etawan or how ever you spell it. Be careful of the water in korea bro, i was stationed in 2ID for 27 months. sure you have heard of freedom bridge, we waded through parts of the river there all the time and once back state side they told me as a result of being in contact with the water there i could never donate blood again. Military didn't tell me that, they never tell ya anything, i tried to donate at a local blood drive and it was one of the screening questions. "have you ever tested pos for HIV, hep a-z, been to the Ingenine River (sure spelling isnt correct of that). I dont see any side affects from it other than a hightened awareness that our politicians are idiots and my 4 year old could make better decisions running the nation than our government...... oh wate, that might be one of the side affects! happy hunting and be safe!
