Just thought I'd introduce myself and tell you all about the huge stripers that are legal to spearfish in Lake Mead!

The lake record is over 58 lbs.!

Lake Mead is a National Recreation Area and my wife and I are lucky enough to be employed by Seven Crowns Resorts which has a marina, hotel (wife works front desk), RV park, houseboat & powerboat rentals, fuel dock (where I work) and a convenience store all within the park at Echo Bay on the Overton (north) arm of the lake.

Hope I can make a contribution to the knowledge in this forum as time goes by. Sure are a lot of knowledgable folks here!

Talk with ya later,
Desert Drew

Those stripers are something I've always meant to look into. Please provide info on time of year, depths, techniques, and any other things we need to know.

Also, I've read in another board about spearing them at a spot on the Colorado river where its just a beach dive and no boat is required. If you know about that, any info would be appreciated.

stripers as in striped bass??? i think i know a little about them. record here in newport is about 63 lbs i believe.

Its striped bass all right. But ironically, we can't shoot them in salt water in California, but its legal to shoot them in the Colorado River and its impounded lakes, or at least some of them. I've seen photos of divers with some very nice fish.

Lake powel is PACKED with stripers you can shoot as many as you want and they are all prety big they hand out between 20 and 80 feet depending on where you are in the lake and what time of day it is they also hang out in schools so if you find one you find alot they also taste really good the season runs from june 1 to september 30

I cant remember how mutch the record striper weighed, but when they cut it oppen it had a 6 lbs largemouth bass in its stomach

I thought carp were the only fish you were ALLOWED to legally shoot at Powell?

I've been wanting to try some spearing at Powell (or other lakes within 6ish hrs from Phoenix).

nope ,you can shoot striper to and unless i'm mistaken you can shoot 2 of any other type of gamefish. You can check regulations at www.utahdiving.com if you want to, as well as dive reviews for all the lakes and hotsprings in utah (and some great crawdad recipies)
