Hi
Been diving and spearfishing for over 10 years.... new to freediving. Took the level 1 class last summer. Looking to learn more about the sport and increase my depth and down time this year.
Cheers
Doug

Welcome to Deeperblue! You're off to a good start. Did you notice significant gains after you took the class?

I went into the class with absolutely zero freediving experience. I was going to the Bahamas and wanted to lobster and spearfish while i was there. I had read about SBO and the only good advise i could find was to take a class and never dive alone.

My static breath hold was four and a half minutes and had no problems making the 65 foot dive, although I couldnt stay there long.
Im trying to meet some local free divers to spearfish with this summer and make my way to the 100 foot mark...... thats where the good stuff is around here.....

Those are very respectable numbers. Have you tried the forum search function? Try searching North Carolina. We've had members from there in the past.

Thanks! I will give that a shot. I know there are lots of people who freedive in Wilmington, NC. I plan on getting down there more this year. I am around 2 hours north of there...great diving down there...
Cheers!

Hey Doug!! i'm in Wilmington and new to freediving (and hopefully very, very soon spearfishing). Trying to meet more people, as we moved here almost a year ago. Would love to connect, you are so close to Wilmington!

Im in Morehead City - I dive either out of Beaufort or Swansboro. I have been scuba diving and spear fishing a lot, but no free diving to speak of. The places we go are over 100' and I am just not there yet -
Do you scuba dive?

I do not scuba dive, but would like to get the cert in the next 2-3 years. Very new to all of it and freediving has my heart, so I’ll probably do scuba after I pass level 2 (probably next summer).
Are there good places to take the course that you’d recommend?

Hi all, just dropping a not to see if I can revive this thread and meet some locals familiar with the conditions. I’m in Raleigh but plan on driving out to the coast on weekends this summer. I have a kayak but am also open to shore dives. Let me know! Also down to exchange contact info or join other sites if that’s where the conversations are.

Hey Jimmy! We are here and kickin’!:) nice to see another diver in the area. I’m in Wilmington and trying to find time to get out to dive.
Do you freedive or scuba?

Lyoshka,
Glad to hear it. I’ve been stalking a bunch of forums for activity in the area and most seem to be radio silent haha.
I’m certed open water for scuba and have years of free diving experience, so I prefer free diving. I have all the gear (and then some) I need for freediving but haven’t bought a bcd. It’s on the list.
Do people around here do shore dives? Or does visibility, current, and boat traffic suck unless you’re miles offshore? Trying to get a feel for this place haha

Hi Jimmy!
Sorry for the delay in responding. May was a bit insane, life-wise. A little background-I’m very new to diving of any kind. Went to the Red Sea a couple of years ago and fell in love with the idea of freediving:) we since moved to Wilmington, so I can dive. Freediving has been a slow journey, because I don’t have anyone to get in the water with to get comfortable with equalization, so I need to work on that this summer b the pass level 1 cert. always open to getting together and diving off the jetty. I *think* that’s the only place here suitable for diving without a boat....

I’m actually getting scuba-certified next two weekends, but by the end of July 1, I should be certified. There is also a spearfishing tournament in July here in Wilmington. July 13-15. Are you on Facebook? Look me up if you like-Lena Maximova Sutherland.
