I recently joined this site to learn more about spearfishing. I've been abalone diving for over 25 years and just recently caught the spearfishing bug. I was diving for abalone with a friend who had a pole spear when I spotted a big ling. I pointed it out to him and he offered me his spear. The ling was on a rock point in ambush mode. He was about 10 feet deep, but the water around the rock was 45 feet deep. I speared him and the fight was on to get him off and on the stringer. As I was wrestling with him I caught movement below and watched a seal swim below me upside down staring at the fish. You could see in his eyes that he wanted that fish. It was a little unnerving, but an awesome experience. I went home, did some research and ordered a speargun. I still haven't been in the water yet with it, but will be hitting it hard in two weeks . . . can't wait.
