Hey all, great site this aye?

Anyhow, for those feeling in a charitable and knowledgable mood I have a few questions:

Anyone here from NZ? Or more specifically Christchurch? Or those that have just visited NZ, I would love to hear any thoughts relating to spearfishing in NZ, eg what you thought of it, good places to go etc, anything you think would help someone relatively keen on spearfishing yet inexperienced, like me ;)

And secondly, I imagine this has been covered in quite a lot of depth already on this website but I'm having difficulty finding it if that is the case:

Pneumatic vs Band spearguns. For spearfishing around rocks etc, not blue water. Which is best and why? Any recomendations on good guns for close to shore amongst the weed sort of conditions? (going for butterfish etc)

Thanks very much for any feedback!

Cheers, Dale.

Welcome from Texas! I've never used pnuemo guns. Always been happy with band guns.

And yeah Al, thats the problem, I've never used a pneumatic gun either. And I don't know anyone that has, everyone just has band guns or polespears. So I'm sort of in the position of just getting one to see what they're like.

Air guns are fantastic but you best read up on them first - use the search button & look for "mamba" air guns.
You can click on the dry barrel air gun link in my signature for some more technical info too.

In Texas we shoot--near shore--mullet, sheepshead, black drum, certain grouper & flounder legally. Off shore beyond 9 miles US we can shoot just aboutm anythig, ling (cobia), mackeral, baracuda, American Red Snapper, AJ, Dorrado (Mahi), grouper species and many more.

Well I have, perhaps rashly, just brought a 70cm Technisub Sea Ranger pneumatic speargun. I got it second hand for $170 NZ with everything and all in working order - the seller is willing to guarantee this all so that somewhat removes any risk for me I suppose.
Anyone know anything about these guns? Or any tips about owning or using a pneumatic gun that you think would be good for someone who hasn't before? Once again, thanks very much.

Hey there Dale,

There's no shortage of NZ spearos out there, but mostly on the fishing.net.nz forum. They've even got a Canterbury Spearo thread. Most of us use band guns over here, but just about anything can take down a butterfish ;)

I've always loved Pneumatics since I had the Technisub Jaguar (the james bond spear gun). Theyre great guns but keep the tip of the barrel out of the sand and careful with beach diving. Loading and firing the gun will tear up the seals and scratch the inside of the barrel and cause leaks if sand enters the barrel.

Troll:

Please get back on your medication. :crutch You're wandering again and I'll be forced to inform the nice men who bring the white coat with sleeves that buckle at the back you are on the loose. :blackeye Sic semper stupidus PS: In Texas we "fix" the pets.
