Hello from San Diego/SCI

Hey all,

I've been spearing for a few years now, but it only became a passion over the last year while I was living on a small island in the Marianas. I've returned to San Diego and find myself again working on SCI, where I'll be trying to get into the water as much as possible. Anyone on DB also live out here on SCI? I have some co-workers who are sometimes keen for a snorkel, but nobody is as interested in or as committed to getting into the water as I am. It would be great to connect with another spearo.

Also, I've been registered on Spearboard for a number of months now, but still don't have the authority to post threads or reply to posts...does anyone on DB have a Spearboard account? I've read that the Admin for Spearboard sometimes needs a poke before he takes care of account activations...would anyone mind asking him to do that for me?

I envy you living on San Clemente Island. I first dove there in the mid-1960s when I was stationed in SoCal, and I've been diving there since moving back here in 1975. Before I retired from the Marine Corps in 1980, a general that I worked for used to fly us out there in a helicopter, ands then the Navy would take us out in Wilson Cove, which as you know if a restricted area where no civilian boats are allowed. We used to really load up on the white abalone and lobster.

Unfortunately, that didn't last forever, and now its a 50 nautical mile run in my boat to get there.

The first white sea bass I ever shot was in Pyramid Cove, and many of my friends have taken their first one in the same kelp bed.

Bill, those sound like the days. I haven't shot a WSB yet myself, so it's probably safe to say the kelp around SCI will see me harvest my first one, too.

Some friends of mine were at the East End of the island yesterday and shot some rat yellowtail (around 12 pounds) but they said the kelp beds were all gone. This warm water is really screwing things up.

Is there sargasm at SCI or is it just dying back from the warm water? I hadnt dove Catalina in months and then last time I was there was stunned by the change.

I honestly don't know much about sargassum, but from what I've heard the kelp die-back is due to warm water temps.
