Cool, someone from my general area! Welcome to Deeperblue! Where do you usually dive? I haven't heard of any good spots around Santa Cruz. Seems like it's too exposed over there. I usually dive in Monterey, though it's been a regrettably long time.

Free diving in Santa Cruz is a rare opportunity- I hear you can dive the reef at seamers lane. There's a small reef at the outfall pipe at the end of West Cliff. I've never actually had a good experience free diving in Santa Cruz, but there has to be a few good places.
I was teaching some friends how to dive and we started at Cowells beach. That was fine for basic safety training but the water is only about 20' deep and there's nothing to see. We did a second set of dives at Natural Bridges. There's a pretty big kelp forest there and a few rocky bits. Seems OK for training in the morning but when the wind comes up the exit can be adventurous.
You are right, Santa Cruz is just a bit exposed. The Municipal Wharf is a good night dive on SCUBA.
I usually head down to Monterey for Free Diving and SCUBA.
This weekend, I'm headed up to Sea Ranch for a weekend of abalone and an opportunity to try out my new Omer 75 speargun! Fresh Fish!

I wouldn't have expected the Municipal Wharf to be a good spot. How is the viz there?
