recently I was given a snorkel package to go looking at the reefs, and a hand spear, and now I am training to get into the deep blue.
So hoping to meet like minded fellows and looking forward to my goal in capture tunas or lobsters for dinner

G'day Yud. Another Sydney spearo here. Unfortunately we haven't had much blue off Sydney in the last couple of months. Although I did manage to find some 15m vis on a couple of days last week. I just checked the water again & its maybe only 4 or 5m now on the Nothern Beaches, & this rain & the runoff will no doubt cause another algal bloom.

There are 4 very active spearfishing clubs in Sydney, & they all welcome new members. Joining one is a fast & safe way of developing your spearfishing skills rather than going it alone. Yes, most club activities do revolve around competition but currently there is a strong effort to extend the involvement for folks who just want to spear for food & fun. If tuna is your target, then the club divers are the most active & successful when it comes to chasing the larger fish. The Underwater Skindivers & Fishermans Association (USFA) is the controlling body in NSW, & contacts are available on the web site. The web site is being jazzed up right now, but I'm sure the contacts will all still be there.

If your chasing tuna then a gun is going to be needed. Again I'd suggest looking around to see what the folks who shoot fish use & recommend. We also have had a few serious accidents in recent times with boats running over spearos ,so please, always tow a float with flag if you can. As a point of interest our fishing advisory committee has just asked the relevant Minister in Parliament to write to our Premier to legislate that a rig rope & flag "must" be attatched to a speargun. I would expect to see this as a regulation after the next review of the Fisheries Act.

Hi Yud,
I also live in Sydney....I have a telescopic handspear with a sliding trigger...have had a few goes at spearfishing off Cronulla and once off Kurnel.....haven't seen any lobster yet....some stingrays and lots of those brown fish that hang around the weedy rocks....looking forward to diving on the Barrier Reef next week...
