Hey all,

I was just wondering, when and where did you all learn to spearfish? And do you prefer to go off of the Shore or boats?
My grandparents have a house in Selsey and I want to start learning and hopefully one day get a few bass out from under the lifeboat.

Just need to find somewhere to learn!

I have done a fair bit of scuba diving, switched from PADI to BSAC last year and have snorkelled from a very young age, as well as fishing. Spearfishing looks like the ultimate combination!

Hi Powder, I think there is a London spearfishing club but you can contact Bryn who does spearfishing courses View Profile: Almostafish
Thanks, I have sent him a message.
I am very jealous of your location on the Channel Islands, some awesome diving to be had off there!

I was also looking a little bit at the "Sussex Club" as a lot of that seems to be around Bognor Regis, which isnt really too far from Surrey (where I am from).
Regarding clubs are there any that you know are better than other?
Not sure if my best bet is to go to a large club (maybe quite vague because of the amount of members) or a much smaller club where everyone knows each other.

Well Alex dont worry to much as it seems heavy commercial fishing activity has changed the situation in recent years!!
Guernsey was once a very special spearfishing venue & guys would travel far & wide to experience our fish rich waters but now we struggle to find fish:head
However this is the situation in many places & Guernsey still has its moments.
PS we have a Guernsey fish in every year & you would be welcome to join us next summer.

hi there, have a look on the BSA contacts through www.underwaterfishing.co.uk . you should find a sussex link/contact on there
Thanks. There wasn't much info on their .PDF, so I emailed the Vice Chairman.

Oh thats a shame, Atleast its not all bad. It would be awesome to come to the Fish-In, but at the moment I don't know anyone and have never even touched a speargun :(

For the Guernsey fish-in, if you can hold a pint of beer then that's much more important :) :friday .

Dave.

So do you think before I join these clubs, I will need to buy the rest of the gear; Wetsuit, Gun and weightbelt?
Or could I borrow for the first couple of times to get used to it/see if I like it?

Hello Powder and first welcome to Deeper Blue.
Bryn (Almostafish) works up in the North Sea playing around with the oil rigs and at the moment he’s up there on a 28 day cycle so I doubt you’ll hear from him to quick.
However he’s very good with his teaching of the freediving and spearo side of underwater hunting so stick with it for a while and I’m sure he’ll make contact.
On the theme of having your own gear it would be best if you did as having a well fitted spearo / freedive wetsuit will help make your experience much better, the same with having your own weight belt set up as everybody will have there weights slightly different from everybody else. I would of thought that somebody would be able to lend you a gun to start with if you’re going to go on a club dive.

Oh and the Guernsey Summer Fish in is something that you have to experience to get the most from, Tis a Grand Holiday and one that I highly recommend.:):friday:friday:)
