Hi all,

I am about to start freediving in pool, but will eventually dive in open water as well. Can I buy 1 suit for both? was thinking about mares open cell 3.5mm or 5.5mm. What do you think about open cell suit to start with? And what about thickness, can I use the above suit for both pool temperature and cooler temperature, about 18-20C??

Thank you for your help.

Armani does some really good suits but they are a bit pricey :)

Sorry just being silly - definitely wait before you buy a suit. Do your Freediving course first - they will help you and explain about suits.. who are you doing your course with? We train in London so might end up meeting you :)

Personally I don't use a suit in the pool but it depends on the pool and what training you are doing eg an hour of static training needs a suit!

For the Uk you'll need at least 5mm for open water - anything less and you'll be cold. Fit is really important for a suit. Elios does some excellent suits and you can get them made to measure - you won't go wrong with a 5mm elios made to measure suit but there are other good suits out there of course. Freediving suits are open cell so don't get anything else...

Hi Simon,

Thank you for the advice. I plan to do course with Londom Freediving and the requirement for introductory course is the suit. I guess 5mm is too thick for pool? Loks like I will need to buy 2 suits.

for static in the pool is 5mil OK, for dynamic freedivers use just swimming suits or some special diving skins about 0.5-2mm thick. If the pool is about 27°C you will be all right without wetsuit

As it was mentioned above 5mm is fine for static. Don't think you need anything for dynamic, I just use a rash vest but I think the pool in Richmond is a bit colder...

If I were you I really wouldn't buy a suit before the course. Can you not borrow a scuba suit or something just for the static? It won't matter much...

Have you asked Mark? I would definitely drop him a line and ask him before starting to buy suits etc for the course.. Oh and say hi to him for me - you are in good hands!

Hey Joco,

I go for elios every time. you will find a lot of info on the topic of suits in general and also on elios suits, materials, thicknesses in particular using the search function of the fourm. Enjoy digging through the archives - you'll feel like Indiana Jones. :)
