Hello Everyone -

I'm trying to choose my next set of fins and I'm really having trouble. I'm getting them for spearfishing in the Bahamas. Because we use Hawaiian Slings we spend a good portion of our time chasing down fish so I need something fairly powerful that performs well on the surface.

I have tried a friend's Cressi Gara 2000s, but I thought those were pretty clumsy on the surface. I was thinking the Gara 3000 HFs would be the same. Any input?

At top end of my budget are the Gara Professionals. They seem nice and my pair of Cressi Reaction Pro have an identical foot pocket (I think) so I can be sure about the sizing. What do you think about them?

Suggestions welcomed!

Thanks

My old Mares Clippers are dying on me and I need to purchase a new pair soon. I could use some advice since this would be my first proper pair. I mostly do spear fishing with currents from time to time. The water depth doesn't drop under 30m and it's very open. No tight reefs, although we do have one spot with some nasty rocks, but it's avoidable.

I need something that has some power behind it, but I love my long dives and it should balance out with some endurance. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hard to say without more info, budget, diver size, how much surface swimming, etc.

Cressi gara 2000s or Beuchat competitions are good stiff comfortable fins in the budget category. Most divers like something a bit softer, like Gara 3000 lds A little more budget and fiberglass or carbon are better. For lots of surface swimming, more angle is better and softer is better. I'm long and skinny, do a lot of spearing and similar diving to 60 ft and some deeper diving. Used Gara 2000s happily for years. Eventually found that Dessault pockets and Specialfins Kelpie mediums are the best combination for me. You will probably be different.

Soft is good - also, always, you have to adjust to surface swimming with long fins. It goes from 'hopelessly awkward' to 'no brainer' - given time.

The budget is pretty flexible, nothing above like $400 though. I'm about 1.85meters tall and weigh around 60kgs. Mostly do spearfishing which involves a fair deal of surface swimming and then the few minutes I'm underwater waiting to ambush or stalk the fish.

In any case, thanks for the tips, I'll keep them in mind when choosing a new pair. I'll probably have a look at the Gara 2000s first, cheers!
