Hi

For some years now, I have some ideas for a project regarding spearfishing in the Azores (SA).
A set of events in the last months, with the last one happening today turned out be the tipping point.

Since I get contacted for info regarding SA I decided to setup a site that has useful information for anyone wanting to visit the Azores for spearfishing. I don't mind answering the questions that I get but it would be nice to have all the info compiled in a place that people could easily access and maybe this could be a facilitator to decide trying the Azores...

I already know the obvious and have some experience from helping some friends but would really appreciate your input regarding:

1 - What information would you like to have available about spearfishing in the Azores or to prepare a spearfishing trip to Azores (or any place at all)

thanks for the brainstrom
Fernando

Hi Fernando,
I would be interested to visit someday!
i guess the obvious questions include places to stay, best places to get in the water, perhaps with a safety grade if thats relevant.
info on tides, currents, boat hire, spearo/dive shops [for lead weights].
Any marine parks/reserves to be aware of?
water temperatures [for wetsuit choice].

That's a great start.

Hi Fernando,

I have already been in St. Maria and St. Miguel,
so now I know the answers to my questions - but perhaps it'll help you.
When I go somewhere for spearfishing, I would like to (ideally) know the following:

1. Licence - where (locally) to obtain it - with specific address/phone numbers. Licence cost, duration. Prerequisites for getting the licence (e.g.medical).

2. Fish limits (bag limit), night spearing (not)allowed, species limits (e.g. groupers not allowed), species limits with respect to the season (e.g lobsters not allowed from 2.2. to 3.3.), prohibited areas.

3. Availability of weights locally - where to buy, where to rent, price.
Any local diving/spearo shops.

4. Any locals who can take you out on boat and price.

5. Water temp., conditions, currents, depth maps.

Regards
