Oh my god, :head

Im going crazy.. Im at Melilla right now ( located in northern Africa ) It has beautiful waters but i have 1 big problem...

MY MASKGLASSES FOG EVERY 3 MINUTES!!!!:rcard:rcard

Please tell me the anti-fog secret!! cause just spit isnt enough for my aqualung spera!!

Thanks,

Dioni

first rub toothpaste on the lense and rinse it...thats suppose to get the factory "wax" off the lense.. then..

"500psi mask defog", you smear it all over the inside of the lense and then rinse twice.... atleast thats what the bottle says. but ive been told to let it just dry on the inside of the lense and it leaves like a little film on it.. it worked pretty good for like half of my dive.

i noticed my mask fogs only when its out of the water.. aslong as cold waters on the lense it dosent fog. try to keep your face in the water more maybe?

kenny

i just do 3 or 4 applications of toothpaste then the normal spit and rub every dive, very rarely have fog problems!

i don't know what toothpaste can do to the sphera, which has a plastic lens but i used it on many swim goggles trying to be delicate and nothing happened
after that, i always spit in it before beginning my training/diving

another tip would surely be this: try not to take you mask off your face all the time
i always wear it at the beginning of my session, would it be sea or pool session, and never take it off until i finished
result: i never ever had a fogged mask!!

the problems with us fogged mask people is that theres fogging already that forces us to remove our mask. im pretty sure (atleast for me) that the fogging is due to sweating. so im not sure wat all can be done to stop it. its kinda like blowing breath on cold glass... its going to fog until it meets cool air.

Toothpaste does it for me. What i do is rub the inside of the lens with toothpaste covering it thoroughly and leave it in for a little while. Then just before getting into the water i'll wrinse the toothpaste off just enough so the lenses are clear. It works like a charm, i never have any problems anymore. Bust that fog! :martial

I think there are 2 problems with different causes but the same outcome.

Toothpase which is a mild abrasive along with anti-fog lotions will slightly roughen (clean) the lens on a new mask and stop them fogging. I've had problems with new masks but once "worn in" they're okay. I have "worn them in" with toothpase etc.

Second issue is the one quoted above. I've had to abandon dives where the mask continually fogged up, no matter how many times I rinsed it out (on the bottom with scuba). This has always happened when I was overheated usually as a result of overexertion, although occasionally through overheating on the surface or over insulated in my drysuit. The heat of my face causes water vapour in the mask to evapouate out and condense on the inside of the mask lens. Bar a double glazed mask the only cure is surface, cool off and try again.

Dave.

One other (minor) tip - when you are donning your gear, put your mask and snorkel on last. Particularly relvent in a shore dive situation, where it can take a fair amount of energy to walk to the entry point, get your weightbelt, fins etc sorted.

If you are breathing heavily while you're get your gear sorted, it will tend to fog up your mask.

Ciao,
Guy

what i always do is wear my weight belt down to the water and then get in with my mask on my head, then get in about 6ft of water and put my fins on, then once im all situated ill spit in my mask and put it on.

but this clearly dosent help. i create heat in my mask from swimming around wether im relaxed or not.

the only thing ive noticed that kinda works for me is to keep my face in the water as much as possible. the cool water on my face and or the mask usually helps.

i found that if i spit in my mask when it's wet, it would fog easily, which does'nt if i spit in it when dry and then rinse it
don't know the scientific reason about that, but it doesn't matter: it works

Get a lighter and hold your mask up with the lense facing the sky, so its horizontal, get a lighter and flick it on inside each lense, it'll burn any coating away and then just spit and rinse before your dive.

This is a problem every diver seems to face at some stage:head

I personally use toothpaste two or three times then saliva usually seems to be all that is required but is has to be good quality thick saliva. I also occasionally use a product call 'Sea Gold' or similar one 'Aquaseal'.

The main thing to remember with any preventative substance is to apply it to a clean and dry lense. Then leave it on until you get to the water when you can rinse it with water just before you put it on.

Of course if the mask become fogged when your below the surface just flood, clear it, and you can see. Not a very suitable technique for apnea diving:duh

With a Sphera the plastic could require a completely different treatment. I only ever use saliva with my regular swimming goggles.

There is also a huge difference between masks.

I found the Sphera to be one of the worst "fogging" masks out there. I also had an Omer Alien that was so bad I had to stop using it. Now I stick to a Cressi Minima and an Omer Abyss, both never fog. Even when used in African waters.

I use an alien and after toothpaste once I just spit in it before each dive and have never had a problem! when you clean it with paste, after rinsing and drying rub your finger on the lense, it should squeak, if it doesnt then you haven't cleaned it well enough!

hmmmm......... i dont know if it`s just me but i noticed that fogging problems almost always happens to masks with plastic lenses that`s why i stay away from plastic dive masks and they do scratch easily, i have a tusa liberator(my favorite) and a back up gull abeam mask by AQA. i use white toothpaste twice(just to be sure) on a new mask and after that i only need to spit in my mask never have a problem fogging.. goodluck guys come up safe :) p.s. anyone here want to swap my gull abeam with a cressi minima???

Rubbing a drop of washing-up liquid over the lens, then rinsing off, keeps mine clear for hours.
