Hello Everyone,

I've been reading the forums here for some time now and decided I need the Community to help ! Please.

I'm a guy,I'm 28 and have been intrested in free diving for a while now, unfortunatly I have been an idiot for a large portion of my life by SMOKING (since the age of 16 !!! BUT...... I gave up 8 months ago now and will never touch the nasty little cretins again !! Apart from this, the main problem I have is the amount of weight I put on and my complete lack of knowledge on how to change my life around ! I put so much weight on,so fast, from eating un-healthily and giving up smoking and working a desk job that I actually have stretch marks around my navel. I really want to be able to increase my fitness ten fold and lose the weight. I have just started at the gym and am working hard but I really would like to know what to eat and when. I have heard all sorts about 100% fat burning mode and so on that I am confused, whats dangerous whats not, what do I do arrrrrgh PLEASE HELP !

Congrats on quitting smoking!! I know how hard it is.
I too smoked a long time, 35 years to be truthful. I was faced with a live or die ultimatum. I returned to water for healing but thats a long story.
First off some advice if you will. You will reach a point where you think you can have a puff or two. Don't Do It!! End of that subject, been there, done it, it dont work!! :)

To me, going through the fat thing at 6 months is just a celebration of your new found life. Its great! but your right sooner or later you have to take it off. There are a lot of good threads and people here that can help with dieting
and training and I might add, a supportive bunch!

I found this Link soon after I found this place. It set me on a new road.

Thanks Jim I'll take a look and don't worry about the smoking there is absolutly no way i'm going to ever touch one again, I just really want to know that it is possible to get to a level of fitness I've never had before and to know that I definatly will be able to shed inches and also increase my breath holds.

Thanks again ;-)

Tozstyle,

Congratulations on quitting smoking. Everyone gains weight when they quit smoking. I wouldn't worry about the weight for a while. You will be amazed at how quickly you get into the best shape you've been in for a long time. When I quit smoking, it only took a month or so of swimming and I was feeling awesome. Good luck.

Michael.

Ill throw in a congrats too. You said you were thinking about freediving. There are very few things that burn more calories than freediving. I read that, according to Terry Maas, a well known west coast freediver than you can burn nearly 1400 calories an hour freediving. That has to do with you body keeping itself warm and the exercise of the diving itself. There not much around that will do more than that and hell freediving is way more fun than normal exercise. Not to mention how good everyone looks in a wetsuit. Heh

Best of luck
Colin

Thanks so much everyone, I've been at the gym for about 2 weeks now and I think I'm starting to feel the benfits, can't see anything yet but feeling better. 7 years ago I used to be able to do just over 60 metres on one breath, now it feels like my heart is going to explode just getting to 25, at times it all seems impossible to be able to get my health back to where it was and then further, I just want to know it's possble ! THANKS

Hi, what has worked for me is the atkins diet. Now I add vegetables and salad but try to go low on carbs. I've tried low calorie diets and I just starve, I don't like that method.

I think the atkins is a good diet, and if you need to loose a lot of weight. I will try the method eric fattah recommends of the book "Natural hormonal enhancement".

In conclusion what works for me is low carb.

I quickly lost sixty pounds about ten years ago by adopting a very low fat diet. However, such an approach can be detrimental to health.

The GI Diet is currently popular, but unlike some 'fads' it seems to be based on common sense and sound nutritional theory. Check out http://www.weightlossresources.co.uk/diet/gi_diet.htm for further info.
