Hi Guys.

I bought a small (50cm) Beuchat Mundial gun in the summer for shallow water fishing in very small confined spaces. When I load the spear into 'the mechanism' it can be moved back and forwards (I'd say by just a centimetre) after it's clicked in 'the mechanism'.

Is this amount of 'play' normal, not to be unduly concerned about or should the spear be more of a snug fit?

The spear doesn't leave the mechanism unless the trigger is pressed, but I'm just a little curious about this amount of 'play'. Does anybody else's gun (of any make or length) exhibit this?

Any advice welcome.

Cheers.
Turunc.

Euro guns typically have a bit of play between the mechanism and the shaft, both forward/backward, and side to side. Im not really sure the reason for this, maybe quicker easier loading? I build wood guns and when the shaft is clicked in place there is very little movement, just seems a bit more secure.

A lot of guys use the beuchat guns here in hawaii and I haven't heard of any misfires. But I would still air on the side of caution and treat it just like a fire arm, never point it in the direction of another diver, dont load it out of the water and you should be just fine.

Good luck, and go shoot some fish!

Cheers Blaiz. I have just returned from a 2-week holiday in Zakynthos, an island in Greece, and last Friday christened the gun in a beautiful deserted bay which I had to myself - not another human in sight for over 7 hours - just doing surface spearo. The gun seemed OK though compared with my 75cm Omer Excalibur 2000 , the trigger seemed extremely sensitive and the spear did shoot after a really minimal squeeze so you're dead right about the caution. But yes it's the relative extra play of the spear once locked in this spear catch mechanism that you naturally fear might equate to possible unintentional misfires.

It seemed to shoot pretty well. There were very few fish available - practically none of minimal legal size - so I was pleased to get a Zebra Bream as the gun's first victim.

I use a Beuchat marlin grip and trigger assembly I have found it to be the smoothest I have ever used. I have never had a misfire with this mech, But I believe that the only safe gun is the one that is unloaded. I have seen some footage of some highly regarded spearos placing loaded guns into boats after dives. This to me is just bad. Bad for spearing, bad for them and a death waiting to happen.
