Hello, I bought these Omer carbon fiber fins and the rubber rails on the sides of them keep coming off. I tried 3M's 5200 but it did not bond to the rubber. So what's next. Anyone had this problem before?

Do you mean C4 fins with Omer foot pcokets maybe?

Reason I ask is Omer hasn't come out with a carbon fiber fin in three years aand of their brand new 2005-06' model, the Rekord 3, there is only one pair in circulation in the country right now. And, I know who's feet they are on.

Describe the fins or better yet send a pic and I'll help you get them straitened out. Where'd you buy them ISA marine?

Mark

I did get them from ISA. I haven't told him that they are broken yet. I know that he will just have to fix them like I would, and well they are my fins now.

Check them out here

They are calling them the Omer Rekord Evolution Fin.

I am thinking about west system epoxy resin with a slow hardener next. Hope that I can keep from trashing the fin. :duh But that would give me a good reason to buy these new ones you are talking about. Does Omer need some overseas field testing done? :wave

All joking aside, I need to get these babies working good as the doggies and wahoo are due soon and I have that clinic in Nov.

Thanks for the help.

Hey Absolute (are you clear and strong like the vodka?) :) Bad joke.

The problem you described is more common on C4's coupled with Omer footpockets than Omer carbon blades which is why I asked. The new C4's don't have the problem anymore though since they went to a rubber rail like the Omer's. This doesn't have anything to do with your fin but it's why I needed to know so I had somewhere to start.

Okay, those older Evolution carbon fins are a stiffer carbon fiber than most and ideal for deeper diving conditions, take care of them and they should last you a long time. Not designed to be banged on rocks like plastic fins. They had a rubber lip glued to the carbon blades specifically designed to fit the older tuna footpockets. You probably have Millenium pockets and that could be one source of the problem, or your Tuna pockets are just really worn.

What has happened I bet is that from the wear of having them removed from the footpockets a couple times or having come apart from the tongue of rubber glued to the carbon blade, the footpocket rubber rib is swolen open and they are just not closed enough to hold the blade firmly in place. Because when these footpockets come out of the mold a film of silicone like liquid is used to remove them it's possible that this is why they are not adhering to the blades well anymore. Or, the 5200 you have is dried in the groove and it's not making re-bonding easy. Remove all the old residue inside the groove of the foopocket and scuff it up with sand paper until it's nice and roughed up.

Apply a generous amount of 4200 or 5200 (use black since it looks better) inside the groove and reinsert the blade hitting the sides of the footpocket ribs onto the blade with a rubber mallet to make sure they are inserted all the way. Take masking tape or heavy rubber bands and roll them around the fin several times to keep the footpocket ribs snug and in place on the blades while the silicone cures. Wait a day or two and remove the tape and you should be good to go.

Good luck :)

Thanks for the tips Mark. Job's done now, just have to wait for the 52 to cure. Everything is sealed and bonded to the max. It should not be a problem anymore. Made one hell of a mess though.

I am looking for a t20 handle (whole trigger assembly) to put on an old excalaber 2000 that I am modifing. I have the t20 mimetic carbon and I like the feel of that trigger and the side line release. Will one fit? Can ISA order it? Bout how much are these babies?

Thanks,
Jay
