Am trying very hard to use my new SUUNTO PC Interface to feed the dives from my Stinger into my PC but it WON'T work!

At first I couldn't even plug it in as I didn't have a 9 pin male connector... Suunto sent me a 9 pin to USB convertor so now it is plugged in through that but the software just can't find it.

Can anyone help? the instructions that came with it and the Help page on the CD are rubbish.. it doesn't even tell me which way around the dive computer goes into the interface....

grrrrrr...................

Some thoughts:

- Did Suunto supply the software driver for the USB/ serial cable you got?You can find out if the cable is working by going (in Windows) to Control Panel -> System - Device manager -> hardware and scroll down to Ports. If the driver exists then the cable will show up there when it's plug in. If not, you need a generic USB/Serial driver.

- You need to get the Suunto Dive Manager COM port number to be the same as the USB/serial in the Device Manager. Choose one that is not used by any other device (like COM 4)

- Default settings should work (I forgot what they are). When you connect it the body of the interface should be under the Stinger body.

Let us know how it goes,

Peter S.

I haven't got more to add to Peter's good advice but just wanted to say, "I know your pain". It took me many hours to get mine going through the USB serial adaptor as well

any suggestions on where I can get a "generic USB serial driver" whatever that is..... (I am internet savvy but not a hardware geek!)

What version of windows are you using?

What is the brand of the adapter?

I think with at least a newer windows (xp), that driver would propably be already in (native). But for older versions, you may need to find it from the homepage of the supplier of the adapter in question. Just guessing, never actually used one.

several hours of swearing at my pc later, I made this work

now I can't see how to copy and paste a graph to send it to someone - any ideas on that?

I'm sure I'm doing something weird in terms of my ascent/descent time split and I'd like a mate or two to be able to take a look....

Close all other program applications and do not connect your PC to the internet then try. Mine works that way.

Easiest way, in Windows, is just hitting the 'PrtSc' button next to 'f12'. This captures the entire screen, then you paste it in whatever program (Word, paint, etc) and crop it accordingly.

yippeeeeee its working!

here is my favourite dive

sadly my stinger made it without me... when we were checking the rope length in Nice!!

Well all I can say is yet again, thanks DB! I spent a good half hour last night firstly swearing at my D3, then swearing at the new USB cable I bought, then swearing at my laptop :vangry . After staring blankly at the Suunto website for a bit I did a search on DB and found this beautiful thread. 15 minutes later I was done. The key points that made my USB interface work:

1) Make sure you install the USB driver;
2) Make sure the COM port in the device driver is the same as the COM port in Suunto Dive Manager;
3) Check all of your COM ports - the connection only works on one port on my laptop; and the fourth and most important (and the cause of most my swearing)
4) Make sure the interface is connected the right way to your watch. Mine was back to front though I didn't know it. When I switched it around it worked like a charm.

Next step.... let's go get some data to download

Thanks for sharing your knowledge guys!

Cheers,
Ben

Ha Ha Ben

Exactly the problems I had (and it didn't help that the software that came with the kit was years out of date. Once I downloaded the new version from Suunto's website it worked much more easily)

glad you got it sussed - post some of your dives if you like. I will be downloading mine from Dahab over Christmas and will put them up if they are interesting
