Hi, I'm new to freediving and could really use some help with choosing an Elios wetsuit.

As I'm new to freediving apologies in advance if I ask any stupid questions.

Intended use is recreational freediving in British waters at present above 20m but as I progress hopefully deeper.

Info from Elios and instructor has helped. I need 6 or 7mm closed jacket with integrated hood and 5mm high waist trousers. Narrowed choice to three but could really use some advice on which materials to choose as I won't be able to afford a new suit for a while and don't really want to have to wear a suit for few years that is wrong.

Choices are
1) Suit open cell inside / Nylon elastic Black outside Neoprene Heiwa This is the best-seller for spearfishing, very elastic, warmth, aderent to the body, durable with lining outside and good also for deep divings, but for get into must use always talcum or water-soap.

2) Suit Superelastic lining inside / Superstretch black lining outside Neoprene Heiwa soft density it's the most elastic suit in the world, super-soft, super-comfortable, easy to wear like a t-shirt and durable.

3) NEW Suit open cell inside / Nylon Hydro-repellent Black outside Neoprene Heiwa soft density .This is the latest new for freediving, very elastic, warmth, adherent to the body, durable with lining outside, fast dry outside like smoothskin because the lining don't absorb the water and good also for deep diving, but for get into must use always talcum or water-soap.

Please can anyone help?

My questions are is the superelastic inner any good compared to open cell as I've read open cell can grow bacteria easily and difficult to put on (need lube? etc) but superelastic might let water in and so be cold but very stretchy so good for breathing. Does anyone have any experience with superelastic inner?

Could I go for 6mm and still keep warm enough ( I feel the cold a bit) if went for 6mm jacket in open cell.

Does anyone have any experience with the hydrorepellent outer lining?

Any advice would be great as I am a bit confused at the moment.

Hi mate i whats the temp of the water? we have a LEGEND apnea 2 piece wetsuit 5mm it has a camo that perfectly blends on the rocks or the kelps . It has a high waist lower pants better than a farmers john coz you can have the flexibility you want on your upper torso / chest. you can expand your your lungs freely with no restrictions like farmers john. more relax breathing more air more dive bottom time. its has a micro bubbles for more flexibility and its the most stretchable wetsuit . the upper jacket has a double beaver tail clip perfect for eliminating water to enter and no "WEDGES" you dont want to feel that while diving . heres our link to our website check some promos we have to.
DID I TELL YOU THAT ITS JUST $199.00 Plus shipping

Hi Earl,

Thanks for the reply.

Your suit sounds excellent but I can't consider it as import tax and duty is a killer from the States.

What I was really hoping for was just some info about Elios superelastic lining and/or info on hydrorepellent outer as I am a beginner and know nothing about them. I have experienced only open cell inner with a normal nylon outer on rental suits.

I think perhaps I haven't got any replies on this as most of the deeperblue forum are pretty advanced freedivers so probably use different suits, either that or I'm inadvertently making some sort of rookie mistake by asking.

Anyway thanks for trying to help.

A cheaper, and probably as good, option would be to look at a custom made Oceanos for around £130 you just can't go wrong http://www.oceanoswetsuits.com/

I've had 2 suits from them and they fit well and are very durable and warm.

Interesting questions, I'm looking forward on hearing people's experiences on those new materials.

How long do you think your dive sessions will be?

I'm also in the progress of buying/ordering a new suit, I'll buy it from Aqualand Wetsuits because it will be a rather custom suit with some unique features. My suit will be a durable competition suit, relatively thin, 3 - 4mm.

Trying to envision your type of use, I think it's a bit of a difficult predicament. Deep diving and comfortable warmth at the surface are opposed. For deep diving you want a thin suit, to minimise the need for weights, and the amount of weight one needs to push up from the deep.

Spearfising to depths of 7 - 15m allows for thicker suits, more weight.

Now if you want the most warmth for the least buoyancy, I say 5mm open cell + water repellent lining outside. I don't know how much friction this lining gives, nor how durable the repellent is. Those would be questions for Elios.

I have several open cell suits, and never had a bacteria problem. maybe it's because I'm not using them fanatically enough. I also of no people who have. Finding a nice non perfumed affordable lubricant may be a bit of a search. Though it appears more choice is appearing as more people have allergies to many detergent components.

Another idea is to have open cell leg and sleeve ends on a inner lined suit.

ps I did not detect any stupid questions. The only annoying ones I sometimes encounter (on youtube) is those repeated ones. Lazy people not taking the slightest effort to read though previous posts, or search the forum.

I am also a Custom Wetsuits for Spearfishing, Scuba, Triathlon | Oceanos Wetsuits fan.
In fact my latest suit has a nylon inside lining as well as a durable outside lining!
To be honest if money is not an object & if you are prepared to wait a little longer the Elios brand is probably a better suit however oceanos are great suits for the money & the tried & tested - smooth interior, nylon outer 5mm suits will work perfectly well in our English waters.

Thanks for the info about Oceanos suits, hadn't seen them before. Will consider them for suit depending on how I get on with the Elios one.

Also thank you Kars for the help especially as I did not realise the technical difficulty concerning diving deeper and keeping warm on the surface.

I think most of my diving sessions should be less than 2 hours.

I was thinking the same as your advice about the open cell with hydrorepellent outer but my instructor has suggested the superelastic, I think based on ease of breathing and bit more robust. On balance am probably going to go for the superelastic for ease of movement, dressing , robustness etc. but will ask Elios about the open cell on leg and sleeves if they can do it. Thanks for that tip.

I think that if I I do get good enough to be diving deep like you then will have to consider a different suit perhaps like your competition one anyway.

Thank you once again for the help will let you know how I get on.
