hey guys... I just bought a tri-tip barbed for my polespear and the barbs already broke off the tips!!! Is there anyway I can revive this tip of mine and possibly make new barbs or mod something to it?

I assume your talking about a flopper on a screw on tip? If you still have the flopper, go to a hardware store to find a rivet to re-attach it. Otherwise, check with a local or online spearfishing store for the flopper and rivets.

If it's a "three prong" you're talkin'bout then you really don't NEED the barbs. If you get a good solid shot on a fish the fish will be WEDGED into the three prong - Thus incapacitating the fish. Thats the beauty and the design of a "three prong" or "paralyzer" type tip - The wedge effect.

Also just in-case you don't know - A three prong or paralyzer type tip is to be used mainly for fish under 5 pounds. Bigger fish can easily "thrash"
off of a paralyzer tip.

As a tip - Don't "retrieve" your fish by pulling the fish to you on the end of the polespear...Rather keep forward momentum on the spear. Sometimes I even "pin" the fish down to the bottom or against a rock then grab the tip of the polespear and fin to the surface where I will remove the fish.

If you really NEED the barbs then a good chisel and a hammer would do the trick - And maybe a third arm to hold the "Tri-Tip" at an angle.

If the "tri-tip" is like the first pic then it's a "paralyzer" tip...If it's like the next pic toss it and get a "three prong" Paralyzer tip! In my experience the trident type tip is garbage. You'll lose ALOT of the fish you spear with it. Yes...You need barbs with that tip for sure!

Awesome that helps a bunch! I have the paralyzer tip btw. Im fairly new to spearfishing and i thought i would need to be buying a new tip because of the broken barbs. I shall definately start using that forward momentum technique. I usually let my pole drag at a downward angle after catching something because I was reliant on the barbs.

bgill - you're right on target (pun intended)roflI had to learn overcome the adreniline rush after a shot and perceived need to breath. Now I focus on controlling both my heart rate AND getting the fish under control. :martialChef Al
