From AIDA's webpage:

Record Attempt by Herbert NITSCH

Pre requisites:

VENUE: Dean's Blue Hole, Bahamas

It was scheduled to begin yesterday, but no news on his webpage either.

Judging from his experience and statements at the Worlds, it is doubtful if he will do cnf, but you knever know with Nitsch.

Kerian writes today in his blog:
Today, I am going to be completing some filming with Blue Eye FX and then I am helping Herbert with his first world record attempt (142m variable weight) which should be interesting.

I hear reports of a successful 142m World Record on a sled made just before the attempt!

Well done Herbert!!!

Cheers,
Ben

Apparently he got the idea from a Blue Peter 'here's one I made earlier' involving some prit stick, double sided sticky tape, an old margerine container, a couple of bamboo sticks and the insides of four toilet rolls. Tarting it up with glitter and dyed brown string finished off the whole sled rather nicely.

Congratulations to Nitsch on two new World Records. :friday

Now the hardest part is left: CW. Will he be able to reclaim the very prestiguous CW throne? He broke his eardrum on his 120m record dive.

I think that was sensationalist reporting, Aber. As I understand it he rode his eardrums a bit but didn't damage them.

Well, a little sensationalist reporting also within freediving won't hurt, will it?

Ok, it's just what I have heard or read here on the forum. I don't know who's responible for these kind of spectacular false rumors about World Record dives from the terminator. Maybe it was Nitsch himself, trying to amplify the image of himself as the "reach your depth no matter what man"? Anyway, it was one of the great dives in the short history of freediving, improving his own record with 6 meters! I doubt if Martin Stepanek would ever do such a thing, even if he could. As Simon - our brilliant reporter from the Worlds in Bahamas - recently wrote when Nitsch announced a new World Record in CNF - a discipline he did not train for (if we can rely on the rumours):

you gotta love crazy Herb!

Congrats to the Flying Fish on 2 new World records !

I watched Herbert's 120m dive, it was very impressive to watch someone bump up the WR by 6m and be so clean on the surface. (Apart from Narcosis)
He definitely did not rupture an eardrum. Getting salt water into you inner ears would normally lead to vertigo, ear infections and often require anti-biotics. He was in the water again a few days later for some fun diving. From conversations with him and others he definitely does tend to ride them. :t

Cheers,
Wal

April 9th 2005. WR CNF 80m. Martin Stepanek. Previous record 66m. Total improvement, 14meters.

You got a point. But, that was not his own record and not CW. One could perhaps say that CNF at the time had been overshadowed by CW, and maybe been a bit neglected, beeing without the same status as CW. Stepaneks amazing dive did seem to have been the start for a change in that. I seem to recall that this dive made a huge impression on the hole diving community. And I think it was a point for Stepanek to reach the same depth without fins as Pelizzari's last World Record with fins (1999). He had a quite definite motivation for making this depth (if I am right about it, that is :)

Ha, you want crazy things from Martin? Bursted eardrum to reach the target? Here you go: on one of the last team WC, he faught influenza during the competition, and during statics he ruputred an eardrum while caughing underwater, but did not give up, and continued until he fulfilled the target time. I think they are crazy all.

So Herbert did it again. He is unstoppable. I believe that someone with PB´s 214m in NLT and 120m in CWT can go much deeper than 142m in VWT. Anyway great performance as always

Don't get me wrong about Stepanek. I consider him and Nitsch as the Worlds best freedivers among the men today. They are just very different. But different personalities with different abilities competing for medals and World Records is among the things that makes this sport so interesting and fascinating. What will their next move be?

Herbert completed 123m CWT at 1pm today in Dean's Blue Hole.
dive time 4:00
SP in 6.5"

Incredible! Congratulations to Herbert.

I get the sense that he still is not near his limit. He just sits back and announces WR+1 and will keep doing that no matter what other people do...

1) Very close to a World Record (for a very short time) and a Silver in CNF (DQ for SP)
2) Gold medal in CW
3) World Record in VW
4) World Record in FI
5) World Record in CW

All this is achieved within 7 (seven) days! Hats off for Herbert Nitsch! And there may be more. There are 3 more days scheduled for records, but who would wonder if he called it a day now. Huge congratulations.
