Welcome to Deeperblue! What sort of breath hold and depth did you reach in your class? It's phenomenal to see the progress that people make in such a short period of time.

BatRay what part of california? I am from sacramento, currently living in San Francisco. I have many friends who drive to the coast from Sac for spearfishing and abalone diving. Also freshwater spearing for Striped Bass was legalized this year, so there's good opportunities for river hunts. I took my SSI level 1 course in Marin. It was a great experience.
I'm in the Fresno area, currently in Squaw Valley. I hadn't heard about the striped bass reg changes. That's pretty cool if you're in an area where you can spear them. None of the water bodies within a couple of hours have them in significant quantities. I did see one in Millerton out on the shock boat for population surveys, but even the biologist said that's the first one he's seen there. It might be worth a try, though.
The closest area for stripers would probably be the San Joaquin, and I'm not sure I'd want to submerge myself in that water. I've done population and water quality surveys there, too.
Have you done much diving in the Sacramento? Most of my river diving was in the Kings River, and it mainly has rough fish.

I dove the american river in Sacramento last summer. We found a school of big stripers. I shot one with a pole spear, he got away. My buddy shot a 30 inch striped bass. And no wetsuit during summer
That seems like some pretty warm water temps. Were you upstream of Nimbus, or downstream? I wonder what their water quality parameters are, especially since that is a trout and salmon river.
We shocked some decent-sized striped bass out of the Grasslands Bypass, but they had external parasites (anchor worms, I think). Not sure if that's common for every river system, but in contrast, the fish out of the Kings always look really good. The San Joaquin has some issues, that's for sure.

I'm based in Cork and am looking to build a bit of a freedive community around Ireland. There is a small group of us at the moment.
