Hi all, looking for some advise

Hi all.

Looking on a bit of advise on whether i should get a speargun or not.

The reason being is i am not really that good at breath hold diving at the minute, now i know this will improve with practice but should i get my gun now or wait?

Maybe start with a pole spear?

Is there much fishing in really shallow water?

In Dorset some of the best fish come in waist height (or shallower) water. If you can find a beach with strings of seaweed or shallow reefs you will always find fish and as you say practice makes perfect.

Spearfishing is not just about being able to hold your breath for minutes on end. It is more about enjoyment of being in fish territory, and then adaptin your skills an techniques to stalk fish or lure them out of their holes.

The questions you need to ask yourself are, do you feel comfortable in the water surrounded by weed and fish and most importantly will you feel comfortable carrying a dangerous weapon in this same environment. If the answer to both is yes then go for it, but make sure you take all necessary precautions such as a surface marker buoy (smb) to alert others to your whereabouts and dive with a buddy.

In answer to the questions above, i love nothing better than being in the water, it's were we spend most of our free time

Still need to pick up a SMB and i never go in the water alone

Again thanks for the tips, makes me more hopeful of some successful fishing.

You got some good advice from Scoobaru there.

Don't underestimate the importance of being as relaxed and comfortable as possible in the water, with all your gear, so as Scoobaru said practice makes perfect and do start out with a buddy.

There are a good few spots in the Bay to practice shallower fishing to help your confidence and ability. Post up in the South Devon 2013 thread if you need any local advice etc, there are a bunch of us around.
