Had some scary hold downs.

I've noticed that when I get up early I feel out of breath.

I'd like to improve my confidence after getting thrown into the water.

Hi Jago

I've taught freediving to quite a few surfers who wanted to learn about holding their breath and generally be more comfortable underwater. Take a look at the threads here in the general freediving section and beginner section and if you're interested in taking a course have a look at www.learntofreedive.com or drop me a mail

surfing? ... Relax, don't fight it!
If you can't relax watch other surfers from the beach., When they fall count how long they are down.
When you get struck down by a wave try counting. Its suprising how short hold downs are even in big surf.. but they do panic you!

When you start reading about breath holding the main focus is relaxing.
Hope that helps.

Hey jago, if you're a UK surfer shows you have determination!
Practice makes perfect mate, as regularly as practical/possible work on your cardio-vascular fitness by doing weights, track work, active sport, whatever that gets your heart beating fast for an extended period of time.
Also train your mind and body with Hatha yoga or the like, learning to breath correctly and to relax and control you mind.
For inspiration, watch the lads taking unbelievable beatings while surfing huge surf in Nor Cal and Hawaii etc, and of course the awesome breathhold feats of the elite freedivers.
Cheers and enjoy the journey, fella!
