Hi All,
I am Matt, I have a BSAC Sports Diver qualification and I am very interested in doing freediving. In fact, I think I probably was before even starting scuba diving! I used to find myself trying to swim lengths of my local pool underwater as a kid... even now I occasionally give it a go, especially when in my last year at university they opened a 50m pool, I just had to dive the length... Sadly I missed out by a few metres or so, but not wearing goggles I didn't realise how close I actually was! I know I could have pushed it!
Anyway, freediving appeals to me because it is a very pure sport, it requires very little equipment and it exercises a very natural human capability. I'd sooner be able to hold my breath for a long time than to be adept at using various mixes of gases. Freediving would make me stronger, healthier, better. Scuba, doesn't give me the same sense of personal acheivement. However don't get me wrong, scuba diving does allow me to explore and discover an unfamiliar world with ease and to be able to squeeze far more in a shorter space of time than if I were to try and discover it all by breath-hold!
My desire is to start photography and spearfishing using this minimally invasive sport. It'll give me good exercise, it'll alow me to explore, discover learn and ocasionally it might yield me my dinner!
