I'm pumped to have stumbled on this site. What a great place for information! I live in Minnesota and would like to get into some fresh water spearfishing. So far what I've found out is we can only spear rough fish here. Which I guess is better than nothing. Nice to meet all of you and hopefully talk more later.

Welcome to Deeper Blue, rough fish? When you shoot a few you’ll have to post a couple of pictures, maybe one of the fish and one after you’ve cooked it?
Good luck and dive safe.:)

Welcome from Texas! Here as well--we can only spear limited number of species in both fresh and marine.

Thanks. Yeah it's too bad I'd love to shoot some walley and bass. What do you do with rough fish you spear? I've heard of people eating the smaller carp. I've also heard of some farmers using carp as fertilizer. Just wondering if you eat any of them?

I've eaten smoked carp before and the small ones aren't as bad as people say. My grandfather used to eat fried carp, pickled carp, and smoked carp. I haven't tried any other variation, but I don't mind the smoked.

If you come over to Wisconsin you'll find that you can also spear pan-fish in most parts of the state. There are a half dozen counties where you can't spear anything at all, so check the fishing regulations first. I prefer crappie, perch and bluegill, but will shoot carp if there are a bunch of them there. Some lakes are packed with them and they are killing off the native species. If you do a search you should find lost of threads dedicated to this topic.

The top loin on the carp doesn't have the jillions of bones. some friends of mine cut tha tout and then soak it in (of all things) orange soda (or pop, depending on your region). Beer batter and fry it up.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll definitely be in wisc a bit this summer. Orange Soda! Never would have thought of that, ha!
