I live in the valley east of lake Tahoe. Done some snorkling there and have started diving for abalone on the north coast of California.

I'm basically using scuba suit, fins, mask, weight belt, which works ok but I expect I might need to upgrade as my proficiency improves.

Was scheduled to camp near Ft. Ross this weekend, but saw a forcast for a 12' swell.

Maybe later.

Those conditions aren't so great. The last time I was at the ocean, I was in southern California at La Jolla, which is supposed to have excellent viz. On my hubby's birthday, we went to go diving and the viz was less than 3'. The water was choppy, so we didn't even bother to suit up. He has never seen viz that was better than 12', max.

Welcome to the forums, by the way. We have a USA subforum that we're trying to build up, so feel free to stop in and see what's going on.

Hey BatRay - I don`t have a clue what visibility to expect with a 12 ' swell running, but it can't be good. I'd also expect quite a surge. There was also a small-craft warning so there will probably be wind chop too. BTW did I see that you are from Central California? That's my old stomping grounds.

I am from the Fresno area. I don't usually specify because many people don't know what's between LA and San Fran.

I understand. I grew up in SLO and have always thought of the Central Coast as extending from Point Conception to Santa Cruz or S.F.
BTW here is where I get ny weather info for Mendecino: http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=39.44149598365564&lon=-123.8653564453125&site=eka&smap=1&marine=0&unit=0&lg=en
