Hi Clare :)
You know snorkelling is bloody great! I love it. Have you joined a club?

I'm trying to raise the profile of snorkelling at my local BSAC branch. If you don't belong to a club yet, you may like to check us out:

Scubanaut Diving Club

We meet at Beechdale baths on Wednesday nights.

Cheers,

Gavin.
nice but does this support spearfishing or just a dive club and any good places to fish near notts ty for post lol

Hi Carlo, as mentioned of the other thread, you could check the British Spearfishing Association for Clubs: British Spearfishing Association - index.
Several forum members are members/officers of the BSA.

Or the London International Club:
--- S P E A R F I S H I N G ---> Home of the London International Club
...both sites have useful links to other sites too.
Also check out:
Spearguns by Spearo uk ltd finest supplier of speargun, monofins, speargun and freediving equipment -- no clubs, just a good place to find gear & some good, concise advice for beginners.

You could also try Nottingham University & other colleges in the city, students often organise clubs around all sorts of interests (they might affiliate themselves with the BSA). You could try starting your own. Some pools offer snorkelling sessions (mine does), might be a good place to start.

Looking at the map: http://www.multimap.com/maps/#t=l&map=52.96667,-1.16164|8|4&hloc=GB|Nottingham

Nearest locations look to be N. Wales (talk to Pastor), E. Anglia (reputed to have decent rod fishing), Blackpool area & Lincolnshire (which I know almost nothing about). I have only come across one spearo on the forum from the North so far. Looks like you will need to travel some way to take part. Plenty of new territory to explore. I did hope to explore the Yorkshire coast - but that looks unlikely to happen now.

Spearing activity seems to be mainly on the south coast & Wales - at least judging by contributions to the DeeperBlue.net forums. The season will be longer further south, with gulf stream warming. There is probably good spearing to be had elsewhere though (Scotland?).

Sounds like your best bet for a club might be to hook up with the guys on this thread (Cornholio & ClareW) - & the Scubanaut Diving Club. Snorkelling led Sanso to freediving and others to spearfishing (and/or octopush). The Scubanauts would likely be able to tell you about locations and might help with transport.

I usually spear alone, as do several other forum members, but I cannot recommend it to a 14 year old (I think you said you were 14 ... may be I got that wrong). Search this forum for more information -- for example I started this thread some time ago: Dangers of free diving - which includes a long list of the dangers various members had mentioned. In particular read the article by Terry Maas on Shallow Water Blackout -- scary. I don't push breath holding and I stopped practising to increase it, as I believe that it probably teaches you how to overcome some of your body's natural defences & instincts - as a lone diver, I want all those defences working. I also don't dive very deep, maybe 3-16 feet usually, occasionally a little deeper but not much. However, depth isn't really the issue for SWBO. People have died just sticking their face in the water at the pool to practise breath holding (don't count on the lifeguard spotting you). The risk (of death) can be reduced significantly by diving with others but it is not eliminated completely.
