Hi everybody,

I freedive (with my 16 and 18 year old sons) and SCUBA dive (with my wonderful wife) in San Diego. The diving here is cold (about 52 F on the bottom all year round) but beautiful. I like to take pictures, both freediving and SCUBA diving with my trusty Fuji F810 point-and-shoot. My son Magnus is trying to increase his breath-hold times and doing some of the exercises one can find on the web.

Any advice on increasing breath-hold bottom times?

Guy

Welcome to Deeperblue! Some very beautiful pics you have there. There is a wealth of information to be had on this forum about increasing freediving performance and safety. 52 sounds pretty nice to me. I frequently dive 45 degree water in the spring, and lots of members of this forum go ice diving.

So sit back, relax, and enjoy the site!

Welcome, Guy. Check out the Beginning Freediver forum. There is a truckload of information about freediving, breathhold-increasing exercises, and the like. Also, feel free to use the search function and browse to your heart's content. This website is filled with great stuff. Glad you joined us :)

Hi Guy,

I'm also from San Diego. The #1 advice for increasing your breath hold time is to RELAX! You'll need to learn to relax, slow down all of your movements, and all of this will slow your heart rate down increasing your breath hold time dramatically.

As you start paying attention to your heart rate you will notice when your heart rate accelerates when moving around to much, kicking to hard, etc. Avoid those things and it will help a lot!

VERY IMPORTANT to remember, DON'T push it. Just relax and your time will naturally increase.
