hi there people, My name is Jaime and I'm from Chile, one of the worst countries for sea freediving, i just got into it a few months ago, and have instead been trying to dive in a lake we frequently visit.
My hobbies include: Drawing comics, Bartending/drink mixing, Swimming, Boxing, Yoga, manipulation arts (pen spinning, coin rolling, card flourishing, etc), reading manga and anime, videogames, and physics...
My most recent one is freediving, i've been slowly accuumulating all these hobbies.
I actually draw a story based comic on the subject of bartending, and another on the subject of swimming (planning to include Freediving in there sometime). if you want to read the one for swimming, your out of luck due to the story not being far along.
So far i can dive only to about 10 meters, not because of limitations on my part but because the lake is temporarily dried out, where it is usually nearly 30 meters deep in the shallow parts.
Because i've been in swimming fr three years and i have the proper structure to be a good swimmer (i just don't take full advantage of it) i have the proper technique for the dolphin kick pretty much down, which greatly propells me, but aside from that i don't have much going for me when diving.
My breathhold record out of the water is 4 minutes 43 seconds.. i haven't been able to match it ever since.
I've been fond of the water ever since i was a little kid, i even jumped into huge pools without caring if i knew how to swim or not (my parents hated that). by the age of 6 i was already able to stay one minute swimming underwater crossing the 10 meter long pool almost twice, but soon afterwards i forgot the great feeling of being underwater like that. by the time i was 13 i'd completely lost practice, i wasn't a sportsy kid, but at age 16 something happened and i started swimming, and i remembered my fondness for water. and now about three months ago i read a manga called "Glaucos". It's a japanese comic book series about a young boy from the carribean(?) islands that's found by a freediver who once held the world record for deepest CWT (it was broken by then) and takes him in as an apprentice as he seems to have been gifted by the sea, as he was born in the ocean right after his mother drowned and was taken to a nearby fisherman by dolphins, and he has a huge spleen, lol.
anyway, because of that manga i started gaining interest in freediving, because i was looking for something to do that would be relaxing, fun, and i really really wanted to find ways to see fish underwater and such (i did scuba diving once before and wanted to do it again, but without the equipment, i just didn't know how).
i began learning, i already know the basics of pranayama, uduyana banda, nauli kriya, belly breathing, etc.
i practice static tables twice a week (i did this so it could coincide with my college schedule)
in all of the hobbies and disciplines i mentioned above (apart from swimming) i am completely self taught, so i taught myself all these techniques that felt quite natural to me because, as it turns out, i did a lot of this stuff when i was just a little boy with no help from teachers, i already knew packing, basic equalizing, uduyana banda and other such things.
i do have one big problem though... hands free equalizing, i can't seem to grasp what it's supposed to feel like, i don't know if i'm doing it right or not, all i do is more or less yawn underwater (mouth closed so i just get the feeling) and i feel slightly equalized, but i never know if i'm doing it right, also i have a slight problem with feeling the need to look down when going down, i know it's bad, i just can't help it very well.
I hope to learn a lot here, i'm a physics geek so anything like water pressure or air pressure won't be hard to describe to me, but the biological stuff might. i want to someday reach 40~50 meters just because i want to... nothing competitive.
also if anyone knows a good freediving place in Santiago, Chile where i can learn i would eternally grateful.
