hello i was told that holding breath and swallowing is a good way to equilize ive tried it and it seems to work pretty well up to about 10 ft but when i come up ears hurt a little till i swallow again and equlize for surface is this normal is this a legit way to eqilize? i have trouble with holding and blowing out doesnt always work both ears well. but this works every time. just dont want to hurt ears. thanks ps the guy who told me this clams to be a dive instructor, but ive never heard of this method.

Swallowing does work and is reccomended by some SCUBA instrutors. With that said it tend not to work well at depth with speed, the total pressure it can apply is lower. If you have not yet read it, I highly suggest the Fattah Frenzel workshop document. That is the most reliable way to clear your ears at depth.

If you feel pain in your ears don't dive deeper! :rcard

Remember that ear clearing becomes easier with practice and exercise, no matter what technique you are using.

Stay in the water and have fun ;)

thanks for response,i only feal slight squeazing when i resurface, ears reajusting to suface preassure is that normal? i swallow again and it goes away.

I sometimes get that too when I'm stuffed up because allergies. As you ascend try slowing down (if at all possible) and move you jaw or do a swallowing motion to try to open the e-tubes to let the air out.

yeah thats what im working on and after the 1st time i do it for the day it gets eaiser and eaiser threwout the day. im not hitting any major depths yet just 10 to 15 ft but enjoying every minute.
