Hello everyone,

I am looking to start spearfishing this summer. I'll be doing so off the New Jersey (USA) coast (From boat or shore which ever is available). Visibility from what I understand is pretty minimal (My dive experience is primarily in the Caribbean). I'm a tinkerer and like to do things the hard way,...i'm looking to build my gun from scratch. I'm thinking roller gun , 3ft length (due to visibility), but the problem is the trigger!!! I've seen a few posted on this site, but am really looking for something new and improved or maybe a sleeker design. The butterknife trigger is great, but I don't know if I can safely work the mechanism in murky or low vis water.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated,

:duh

I can't tell from your post if you have never spearfished, or just never made your own gun.

If you have not been spearfishing before, you better off buying a "starter" gun to determine your likes and dislikes. Then from that, contempate your gun design. Otherwise, you might build something you never use. Also, if you've never built a gun before, on your first attempt I would recommend buying a quality trigger mech and focusing your attention on building the stock. Unless you have precision metal working tools/metallurgical knowledge, it is very time consuming and challenging to build a quality trigger mech. You'll usually can end up with less than precise tolerances which can lead to jams, poor trigger release, and even unexpeced failures.
