Howdy All,

I've seen the "Our records indicate that you have never posted..." ...a lot... I finally gave in.

My name's Ivan, a Union Boilermaker and a beginner freediver (as far as freediving training goes). Growing up in the water (from Santa Cruz to Western Australia) and and later in the military, I've always been more comfortable swimming underwater. Lately, out of pure necessity (and after learning a few physiological parameters the hard way), I discovered "freediving" and "apnea" and have been obsessively researching everything I can online. (DeeperBlue has been super helpful.) What I take away from all the research is just how dangerous it can be, especially in my case, with no dive buddy and a static apnea of over 3 min. I swim a lot (in my in-ground pool) and even trying not to train alone in the water, I know my regular/normal swimming's effectively dangerously close to training, whether it's called swimming or training.

I'm real interested in spearfishing and just enjoy being underwater, period. It's the closest I get to flying in the air... like in dreams, of course. Apnea abilities help in other activities too, in my own experience. I'm 37 and wonder how I've made it this far without knowing about voluntary apnea training in general. I've called a dive shop just south of Tally (is it ok to say the name on here?) and talked to a receptive guy named Jeorg that's highly interested. We plan to meet and form a loose, grassroots group, for obvious reasons. Jeorg told me there's a small group that free-spearfishes off a boat out on the gulf from time to time. I know Henning is here in Tally, too. I don't know if he reads these forums, however. What I do know, is a guy such as Henning living right here is a real and rare goldmine if and when any of us in the area commit to the sport. We just can't take risks on our own, this much we know for sure.

Hi Ivan, welcome to DB. You live in a great town, with some real nice springs close. And you are right, a 3 minute static is way too long to be doing by yourself wet.

Dive shop names are fine, just don't get extreme in advertising a place.

Connor

Howdy Saleh. Thanks Connor. For the local that might catch this, it's Wakulla Diving. Even though they're a rebreather diveshop ($$$), they were surprisingly receptive to me as a freediver. (Maybe because it's not mainstream SCUBA either?) Jeorg (a freediving enthusiast from Germany) said he'd like to start posting our business cards for each other. It's a great idea as we know we're at (more or less) ground level here. I'm hoping that's not the case, so please post here or PM to give me a heads-up. Who knows? One of the lives that's saved one day may be your own.

Now, if you can figure out how to wangle a freediving trip into Wakulla Springs, I'm on the way. If not, get them to give you directions to some of the sinks near Tally. At least some of those are deep caverns, occasionally clear and would make great freediving. Just be careful. Caverns can be tricky. Troy is not so far from you and Morrison, both great freedives , with some depth and easy conditions.

Thanks Connor. The wife and I visited Wakulla Springs for an afternoon with our neighbors. If things are ever a go there, I'll post it as soon as I know it is. I'll check out Troy and Morrison. I've heard Scott write about Cherokee Sink too. I'll do a db search on the others and get a map for the area, too. Thanks again.

G'Duy ReefTroll-mate! I grew up down unda in Perth (from 12 to 17 years old). Now I find WA was/is a fair dinkum hotbed for spearfishing... Not that I've got the raw prawn here, being in the gulf of mexico area. Nobody's heard of a gidgee here, or a meat pie for that matter. lol -Always good to hear from Oz. In fact, I just got off the phone with my dad in Perth. Goodonya! Keeper peckerup mate!

MattB in Michigan! I be in Florida... Aaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrr... ... ... ...no? ...nothing? ...no?... are those crickets? I was up in Monroe, MI workn on the Detroit Edison coalfire there in Feb-March. I was really impressed with the quality of folks as opposed to big city America. Those are the Americans the world should see, not our clueless that speak loudest. I noticed MI might be cold. In fact, I was wondering which stop sign was the actual north pole, but that might just been me. I've got a 7mm opencell Sporasub for anything below 68F. I'm an oscar mayer weenie when it comes to cold. I'll spare you the song now...

What's Perth like now? I left there in 1990. It hasn't turned into L.A. or California, has it? That's the same way we yanks speak of that state. It sure was nice to see small-town Michigan is the opposite: considerate, unpretencious and grounded. God bless those eskimos up in the midwest, eh? But tell me, reef, what's with Perth? Be honest, mate!

Oh nothing serious, it's just that all the other cities in the country seem somewhat linked by some form of civilisation, but Perth is so far away from it all!

I see on youtube that spearfishing's big over there. I miss Rottnest Island and I wish I were into freediving and spearfishing when I lived in and around Perth. My father took us up to NW Australia, to the Pilbara region one year and that was awesome. Folks are nice up there and it's nice and warm too. Real pretty country. Oz has a beauty all its own. The manta rays were scary huge, too... insanely huge!

Ivan,

I am in the Tallahassee area. Wakulla Springs would be a great place to practice if they let people train there. I have tried Cherokee Sink Hole, but the viz is always bad there since its a stagnant cest pool. I have gone out to Troy Springs, which is an hour and a half away. It gets down to 75 feet and is crystal clear on most occassions.
