Hello,
I am an experienced snorkeler but I have never spearfished before. I recently made myself a pole spear out of a broom handle, 3 nails, fishing backing, epoxy and a bungie cord.

I tried it out today but I could not get the range I needed to get the nervous mullet. I have no idea what I am to do. I tried the spearon a few dead crabs and it went straight threw them at about 2 feet, so it has power.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also has anybody ever fished or dived Hook Head in Co.Wexford as I have done a bit of snorkeling around there (I live 40 min from it) but don't know where would be best for spear fishing.

Thank you all,
Jason.

hi jason
i have hunted around the hook a bit, the best area we found was between the lighthouse and slade harbour. we used to get in 2 or 3 hundred metres from slade and work to about half way around. we have taken mullet, an odd bass but mostly pollack, some decent sized. there are a lot of spiders to be found there earlier in the year. i am sure there are lots of amazing fishing areas around wexford and waterford, good luck exploring

Thanks for the info.
I have snorkled around Sandeel bay a good few times and it's probably where I am going to do most of my learning :). There are loads of pollack, wrasse and some BIG (6-7lb) mullet there as well, oh and did I mention the copious amounts of sandeels! The place sure does live up to it's name.
It's bloddy cold there though.
Thanks,
Jason.

Welcome to DB Jason. Forget the pole spear idea. You will end up injuring fish rather than catching them. Beg, borrow or buy a 75cm euro speargun like a Beuchat, Cressi etc. Costs as little as £60 (90E). Try to team up with a more experienced spearo. Ireland has some of the best spearing in the Uk.

Check out the link in fcallagy's thread above.

Good luck.

Dave.

jason I should have mentioned if you search on boards.ie there was a guy selling a 75cm gun for €50 and on longboard ireland selling a 90cm for €90

Thank you all for the help. Fcallagy I would love to get that gun but I don't have any money at all, not even 50 quid.. As I am starting college now but I'll have to get something as if I do I'll be able to live on fish as a student :D. My pole spear mk 2 look like a much better improvement, it's about 7 foot long instead of 4 and it's a lot more streamlined, so hopefuly i'll be able to get those timid mullet or the pollack!

Do either of you know who goes spearfishing around the hook as some help would be great.
